Why is the connectivity so poor in SL?

I am located in the central USA and run high performance machines over a good cable connection. I have played numerous sims over the last 12 years from Warbirds to WWIIOL to EQ to DAOC to WoW and more.. I have played many of these games using two machines I currently own. Machines that run those sims with outstanding framerates and only occasional lag.

I have been on SL for two months now. I have to say that the connectivity in SL is by FAR the worst of any MMPORG I have ever played, even going back to early days.....

I must crash or lose connectivity to SL 10 times a day....

Why? Can anyone explain this to me please?

Are servers spread all over the world or something?

That's mighty weird, I'm in Europe and my connectivity is usually fine (connection only acts up if the ISP is borked). Are you sure it's not a firewall problem? There are quite few ports that have to be open.

Edit: SL is notoriously picky with a stable connection, so when I had ISP trouble (reconnecting every few minutes, check your broadband log!), it would repeatedly kick me.

/me recommends closing the ports back up - most people shouldn't need to open any unless your firewall blocks outgoing traffic by default. If you can log in and things seem normal, even for a few minutes, you don't need to open any ports.

My firewall is configured to allow only what I allow, so I HAD to open up a bit to get SL working! ;)
