From: someone Be sure that your graphics card is OpenGL 1.3 or higher compliant AND that you have appropriate OpenGL hardware drivers installed. These two issues have been show stoppers on some machines. Users should be warned that laptops are particularly fickle in their graphics pipeline compatibility. Also, it seems that when users upgrade their DirectX versions through Microsoft's web site, it often overwrites existing hardware OpenGL drivers with software OpenGL->DirectX wrappers (killing performance, if not compatibility). The fix is to re-install the video card manufacturer's drivers after any DirectX install procedure
Got this off of croquet. Is it applicable to SL?

i do it for good measure, but i dont trust direct x since it mangled alot of my lighting code outside of sl into pure bloby crap! (it used to look kickin)stupid 9c ...
with benchmarks on my tired old geforce2 gts pro (ok hardware nuts shadup im still running it at 500mhz core and ramdac +ddr) it can make a difference (so does reinstalling your sound drivers) doesnt do jack on my recent raideon please realise this can be like a pin prick when you just steped out of a swarm of bees
also...
microsoft is overbering and they know whats best for your system, hince if you do windows update it will try and replace your spanking new video drivers with ones made 3+ years ago... so keep THAT in mind too.
point of rambling! (i know your thinking thank GOD)
it wouldnt hurt and unless your experiancing horrid problems it probally wont be noticed

Making sure you have the latest drivers is always a good idea. Be VERY sure to follow the exact steps on this page, however: http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechUpdateGraphics
