Hinting

Hey Jonathan

As far as I know, hinting is required before mpeg4 or QuickTime movies can be streamed, but not for Windows media files or RealVideo (see http://www.streamingmedia.com/article.asp?id=8493&page=1&c=6) files. Basically it wraps the media in a set of how to instructions for the server...but does nothing to the actual codec. Quicktime pro has this functionality built in, when exporting media. Hinting is simply an added meta track read by the server, and it does increase file size.

Additionally, this is dependant on what kind of streaming server Linden labs has...i'm not sure on that one. If you are planning to stream any type of QT or mpeg4 file, then you'll need quick time pro to get it hinted. As for getting it for free, check your library to see if they have any books on streaming media, or on quicktime pro...often there is a CD included and Quicktime pro may be bundled.

Good luck...as for me, i can't even get the start/stop movie to disc feature to work!!!
