I'm looking to buy a new video card for a aging system as a stop gap measure, will be upgrading my whole system within a year,so, I need a video card for under $200 that will give me ripple water and all the goodies.

System specs:

mother board: Asus A7N8X,8x AGP slot
video card:Asus V9280/TD,Ti4200 GeForce chip
RAM:1gig of Corsair XMS memory
Connection:cable

My current video card is outdated as you can see,I'm looking at this card to replace it http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2201323&CatId=0 would it give me all the bells and whistles?

Any other recommendations appreciated.

That would probably do it, what CPU do you have?

nvidia 6800 and 350watt...well err you can hope it work, but highly recommend more watt on those, especially true on agp card.

rec min 450, yes you can get it to run on 350w, depending on quality on your psu, but likly to cause grief if it one of the cheaper kinds.

Nvidia' really demand alot amp on the 12v+

(digged up this one)

350W is plenty, however should you upgrade the CPU you will need to upgrade the PSU as it's almost certain your current one is ATX 1.x not ATX2.x .

The graphics card is good but remember your likely to upgrade to a PCI-E system next which uses a different format to AGP. You can get AMD 939 AGP/PCI-E mobo's but with 939 being phased out their availability will reduce.

The NVidia 6800XT for AGP was selling for about $100 a few weeks ago. But the supplies seem to be drying up, and the few cards that are left are now in the $150 range. Seems a bit steep to me to put in a system like yours. The NVidia 7800GS would be faster still, but costs even more.

The ATI Radeon X1600 Pro looks like it's worth a look for upgrading those older AGP systems. You can get those for as little as $100 after rebate now. Not quite as fast as the 6800, but better support for the latest shader stuff. (But there is the issue that NVidia cards have historically worked better with SL.)
