multi-select "take" deletes objects

Another from the "is it me?" category.

1. Rez two objects, name them "object 1" and "object 2".

2. Select one of the two objects, then shift-select the other as if to link them. But don't link them.

3. Right click on one of the objects while both are highlighted and select "take" from the menu.

4. Watch the one you said "take" to go into your inventory. The other one is GONE FOREVER.

Works equally well if you spend several hours carefully crafting a bunch of objects, select them all by dragging a rectangle, right click and say "take", expecting that it would take them all. This is a really fun way to lose several hours of work.

I bug reported it, just wondering if anyone else sees this. Maybe the inventory gremlins will return my objects while I sleep. Somehow I doubt it.

Actually, this is a little-known feature. I know, I know, it doesn't look like a feature, but have you tried rezzing the object from inventory again? You'll find that both objects rez at once. This is called "taking an unlinked selection"... you can select any number of objects, linked or not, and take them all at once as a single asset, and then rez them all back out in their same relative positions as a group. Really useful for packing up a build that's too big to link.

Now, if you're finding that when you rez the object from your inventory, you only get one object back... that's a bug. I think that's not what's going on, though... when you do "take", that always gives you the object in inventory and then simultaneously deletes it from the world. It's just that inventory items are a lot more flexible than you thought :)

Yes, what Lex says is right. It can be a nice feature. I can take in a whole living room set and then pull it out at once. It won't list the individual objects, just the last one selected.

I've taken in whole buildings this way with drag select. Just have to remember that the object is large, and to take them out while in edit mode, or you'll pull out a bunch of stuff and have it all over the place.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?
Yes, it's true, I have a blog now!

Yes, this seems to be the case. I just rezzed the items that I had multi-selected, and the other objects appeared. Weird. I gave up too quickly.

Thanks for your help Lex and April!

Not necessarily. I think it would be nice if this and a few other "stealth" features were made more obvious.
