I am currently using a public wireless connection to get onto SL(I just moved and I have a DSL connection coming next week) and 9 out of 10 times when I use SL I lose connection while logging in.
I am not getting a very strong signal, something around low to very low, but it is fast enough for decent web browsing and downloading, and I have gotten onto SL with it before.
When I log in, I usually hang at the "Logging in. Second Life may appear frozen. Please Wait." If I try to go online during this(it can take up to 5 minutes before I get kicked) I cannot browse the web. If I check my packets, I stop receiving completely.
Any ideas?

It seems that whenever anything that uses alot of CPU runs, I lose internet.. is there any way to make SL pull back on CPU use? I have turned down alot of settings but it still jumps to 100% CPU use when I log in.

If your signal is "low to very low", you will not have an enjoyable experience. SL chews up scads of bandwidth, and your connection currently cannot handle it. Hopefully you can hold out until next week.

Hopefully you can hold out until next week. Actually once I get on I run pretty well, it's the login that is a problem. I can get a stable 54Mbs connection once I am on, even if it is listed as low connectivity... it's enough to hit 200kbs on a download, and I do pretty decent on bandwidth tests.. so I don't think that is what is breaking me. Like I said, Packets Received just kinda.. halts.. when I am logging in.

I made the experience that SL doesn't happily run on wireless. I get lots of packet loss when I use my wireless connection at home (signal strength and quality are top). 100 MBit cable connection works great but 54 MBit wireless simply breaks.

strange, I've run 3 different computers, OSX and Windows boxes, all over wireless and have no problems what so ever. In fact I've never played SL on anything but wireless and it doesnt ahve any packetloss at all. I seriously doubt its just a general wireless issue, and must be something more specific to your hardware.

I use my Centrino laptop quite often with SL, and it's as fast and reliable as my desktop PC (plugs into DSL router via ethernet cable). Maybe it's more dependent on Wifi chipset?? I've noticed in the past that...if the Wi-fi signal isn't very strong, constant bursts of data seem to reset my connection. And of course, the data lights never stop flashing when using SL which....hmm...which makes me wonder whether that's happening here? Aren't logins and teleporting particularly bandwidth and CPU intensive? (Presumably because everything has to be rezzed instantly.) Lots of thinking aloud there. Sorry if it doesn't make much sense.

I've had multiple compatibility problems between different wireless access points and the cards located/attached to computers. My old access point would reset my connection to my PC about every 10 minutes during heavy file transfers even though one of the other machines in the house never had a problem. Recently I replaced the access point and now I have a rock solid connection all the time and do the majority of my SL playing over it.
If it is a public access wireless hotspot you might not get a choice as to how to address it other than perhaps try another wireless card in your computer, if that isn't an option you may need to find a new hotspot :^).

Maybe it's more dependent on Wifi chipset?? Hey Dillon! *snugs* Hi Missy, Alan! I see the Wifi problem not only on my laptop and the signal strength is "excellent". But I'll give it another try with a different card I got from a friend. SInce I saw the problem on three Wifi laptops now I just filed it as "SL no likey Wifi" and didn't bother too much. But let's see if the chipset indeed is a factor. If so, that would be bad, since the wireless card is built-in The problem only appears with SL, however and it's my own access point, not a public hotspot. I will do more tests to find out what's wrong there Thanks for the answer.
