I now have a new laptop as my pc shat a few weeks ago. Being a LONG time linux advocate, I could NOT buy one with anything other than a MS-OS in Australia. Disgusting! No, there is no monopoly or underhand tactics at play, just nobody wants something that dont exist.
I got a HP Pavilion dv9000, amd1.6 dual core, 2 Gb ram, Nvidia Go 6150. It performs very well and runs SL, and most other things fine. Dont expect to get any linux's to work with it though. Oh it works if you dont need wireless or sound or the webcam.
You can probably get a dell or something with Ubuntu preinstalled.
Good luck, you need it.
EDIT: I really should have bought a mac, now that its over. Next update I will. hmm 4 years to wait now.

The most important thing is to ensure it's got an NVidia or Radeon GPU, preferably with a minimum of 256MB graphics memory. Avoid GPUs which share main system memory (very common in laptops). If you do a search, somebody asked this very question a couple of days ago, and plenty of ideas were given with regards specifications.

I think they are pretty good. Google for them. I have an HP 9000 with a nVidia GO 7600. I am very satisfied with it. It was about $1500 one year ago. In my lame opinion, the 3D graphics card is the most important issue, and good ones seem to come in laptops that cost over $1,000. This has been discussed many times here, have you searched the Forums?
