I have tested in two different platforms with Windows XP. In the first it show the "Detecting hardware" banner and Second Life closes automatically.
In the second you connect but around twenty minutes after you get disconnected. Running a sniffer in this one, we can see a lot of udp packets trying to get out from the machine (network problem?)
Both platforms have languages different from English_US (Spanish and Català).

I'm in the same case as the first platform test. It starts and shortly after "Detecting hardware" closes without even getting into the main menu. We aren't the only one's to be in this case as I've read other posts about that instant shutdown. The solution for some seemed to be to create a new user account without any strange characters ("ö" in my case) but, as some others think, this isn't a solution for me... I'm using a swedish Windows XP Pro and everything worked nicely with the 1.6 (my first version). The 1.7 Preview version did an instant shutdown when I tried it earlier but I didn't really have any clue about why so I didn't care... then. ^.^; Anyway, I'm not complaining about not being able to launch SL... yet. I'm mainly bumping this so this case gets some attention too. :3 Keep working on those bugs and fixes, Lindens. Your work is appreciated. ;3

That's weird. I use windows XP, but I haven't had any trouble with loging in at all, and the game runs fine too. It's just all the recent patches for texture fixes still aren't working. It's also weird because I have all the basic and minimal requirements to run the game, yet it runs fine other than texture loading.

I use windows XP pro, no probs (well, except for the ones everyone are having) maybe home version? EDIT: NVM, MISSED THE PART ABOUT NON US VERSION

Language or non-US installation

I'm not sure but my feelings point to the non-us windows operating systems. In my Mac OS X the client works (not well but works)

Your work is appreciated. ;3 I run on norwegian Windox XP and I had the same problems as you did, with a Å in my username. I dont see any reason why it would run on mine and not on yours. And for me this fix works: Make a new userprofile and run SL from there. Changing my old user name to just "normal" letters didnt help, according to nerdy hubby because there would be some leftovers from the old username in the registry. But on the new one ("limited access user*" was recommended), it runs like it used to. I also installed SL in "Programfiles" and not the norwegian named folder "Program filer" where it originally downloaded and used to work from. I am not very familar with the swedish translations for everything, but if you look at my computer in explorer-view, you shouldnt have any ä, ö or å's before where Sl installs. Also, the dokuments and settings folder need to not cointain those letters. * dont know the exact term for english or swedish XP for this, but in norwegian (might help the swede here) its "begrenset tilgang". Good luck.

My BF and I in game share the same home, cable connection, modem, etc.
After the release his machine would flash the loading icon and then it would just disappear, he re-installed and re-installed again.
I checked the forums that same day and seen another post about the special characters being used.
Hmm so I roll my chair over to his PC to check out this special character situation.
He had used a clean-up program of some kind and was able to re-name a few things, and he used a special character in the name of his pc. The drive was named one thing but when I looked at his processes running the character was different. Basically causing the pc to be lost in space (kinda reminded me of the Prozac commercials where the brain signals just weren't clicking, lol).
After swearing a few minutes I thought to try adding new user on his PC, and tried the game, Viola! It worked!
It seems to be something that changed since the update, but I wouldn't suggest using special characters anyways in the set-up after seeing how his processes changed the character he was using.
Thank goodness for forums and people helping others.
