Two Computers on One Router

Hi. I just got a second computer in the house that will run SL. The problem now is that when two avs are on at one time it seems SL gets mighty confused. Here is some of what I've seen happen as a result:

1. IMs go to the wrong person
2. One av will get logged off (not crashed) inexplicably then 5 minutes later it happens to the other av.
3. We can't TP one another. The tp doesn't show up at the other end.
4. When one av tp's themselves away their av will remain where it was while they go about their business elsewhere. I can still interact with that phantom av leftover (right-click, etc) but it just stands there.
5. Everything can appear normal to the av and they don't know they've crashed, but their friends don't see them online in the friends list, don't see their av, and any chat messages typed don't show up. Still the av can interact with the world, touching objects but getting no response.

I'm using a linksys wireless router, but this happens when both computers are hardwired into the router too.

Both computers are running Windows XP. One Home and one Professional version.

Are there any suggestions on how to make these two avs distinguishable to the SL computers? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Honestly, I have a router setup, and am having NONE of the problem you describe.

And I didn't have to do anything to the router. It automatically does the game routing. How old is the router?

The router is only about 6 months old. I did find something on the wiki I'm going to try.

https://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Problems+with+multiple+computers+on+one+connection

These symptoms are too bizarre, so I'm not going to get my hopes up as I try the recommendation from the wiki. I may be back to tell the tale. :)

This sounds like a Firmware problem. Go to the Linksys site and update your router to the latest build.

Try checking to see what IP's your computers have assigned. Sounds like both have the same IP address which is bad.

If it is that, you only need to renew your IP's. The internal ones. They will both have the same external IP. Just go into your router's setup.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

Yup, release all and renew all IP's might help.

I use a router with multiple computers...no problems like you described.

Set each computer's short cut to run at a different ports...

Wiki instructions here...

http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=Problems+with+multiple+computers+on+one+connection

but edit the short cut, and add -port 13000 on one, and -port 13005 on the other (example, use whatever numbers you want)..to make sure that SL knows who to talk to for sure..

I experienced exactly the same problems with my Linksys router. Follow Jeffrey's advice and upgrade the firmware. Once I did that, all problems went away.

It has to do with the NAT code in the firmware, and an upgrade will probably fix it for you.

I changed the ports according to the wiki advice - made one 13000 and the other 13005 and it's working fine now. whoo hoo!
