The 9000 series asset server is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 asset server has ever made a mistake or distorted information. They are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.
Oh, and someone may well be missing inventory that came in a windfall to you while you may be missing inventory that you haven't noticed yet. Best of all, the database entires that comprise your inventory may also have been corrupted so that inventory operations will become flakey for you if not impossible at some arbitrary point in the future. This is a relatively common failure mode of pointer based storage systems which is why systems that crash typically perform filesystem consistency checks upon rebooting. On the other hand, you may have escaped unscathed with only some duplicates of someone else's inventory contents. The only problem is, you have no idea if your inventory is corrupt until problems start with it. However, you should ignore this post because I don't know what I'm talking about and this has never ever happened before. _____________________

Hey I lost over 1000 items from my inventory yesterday, including a lot of stuff I made. It just vanished... most of it was clothing, hair and shapes.

From the Second Life Terms of Service
4.3 All Data On Linden's Servers Are Subject to Deletion, Alteration or Transfer. When using the Service, you may accumulate objects, items, measures of virtual wealth or experience, scripts, equipment, or other value or status indicators ("Accumulated Status" However, sometimes your inventory is just very slow in loading making it just look like you lost everything. Yesterday I opened my inventory folder to see no contents at all in "Objects" except some folders; five minutes later my objects did appear. Good luck, Cape Weary. . THESE DATA, AND ANY OTHER DATA INCLUDING CONTENT (AS DEFINED IN SECTION 6.1 BELOW), ACCOUNT HISTORY AND AVATAR NAMES RESIDING ON LINDEN'S SERVERS, MAY BE DELETED, ALTERED, MOVED OR TRANSFERRED AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON IN LINDEN'S SOLE DISCRETION. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT, NOTWITHSTANDING ANY COPYRIGHT OR OTHER RIGHTS YOU MAY HAVE WITH RESPECT TO ITEMS YOU CREATE USING THE SERVICE, AND NOTWITHSTANDING ANY VALUE ATTRIBUTED TO SUCH CONTENT OR OTHER DATA BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY, LINDEN DOES NOT ADMIT, PROVIDE OR GUARANTEE, AND EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS (SUBJECT TO ANY UNDERLYING RIGHTS IN THE CONTENT), ANY VALUE, CASH OR OTHERWISE, ATTRIBUTED TO CONTENT OR ACCUMULATED STATUS OR OTHER DATA._____________________

However, sometimes your inventory is just very slow in loading making it just look like you lost everything. Yesterday I opened my inventory folder to see no contents at all in "Objects" except some folders; five minutes later my objects did appear. Good luck, Cape Weary. I am fully aware of their policy. As I have been experiencing inventory loss since my first few months on SL. I have contacted support and several lindens and am currently working with one QA linden to find this "bug." It hasn't only happened to me it's happened to a lot of people. The only difference this time is that it wasn't just 1 or 2 missing items it was over 1000. And yes I know that inventory lags, but I waited with my inventory opened for hours. I logged on and off several times, I searched and re-searched everything. As for lag... My tringo board has been missing for 4 months now. Not asking for money back, I just wish it would stop, and following leads as to "someone's stuff is in my inventory" is about all I have to go on now... |

Sorry Cape, perhaps you missed my earlier link describing one player's problems with an unusable inventory.
In this particular case, the problem seemed to be that the structure of the player's inventory folders themselves were corrupted and the ultimate solution was to get ahold of one of the development engineers who "fixed" the problem by purging the entire affected folder from the asset database and generating a new, empty one. The point I was trying to make is that even with a lot of persistence, a goodly amount of luck, and inducing someone to care enough to take the problem to the developers, the problem was finally "fixed"... sort of in the same way that a guillotine "cures" a head-cold. _____________________
