Why does the SL viewer use so much CPU resource? It is always around 99% when connected to the server and around 50% when just the viewer is open and not connected to the server. If I minimize the window, the usage is 0%.

I also noticed that the viewer keeps using up more and more memory. Sometimes as high as 150,000 k or even more. The memory resoursed are also used when not connected to the server as well.

I also don''t understand why it drains so much CPU power... i have a hefty CPU ADM X24600+ and 2GB memory... some times it uses 1GB to run...!

Ïf you put it in full screen the cpu usage also drops, together with the memory usage ..

games always use as much resources as they can, its normal behavior.

Would seem rather pointless to have a system that would only allow you to use 50% of the resources available, installing 2gb's ram on the basis the OS only allows you to use 1gb at any one time. Modern OS's allow multi-threading, however it would allow all available resources to the single task being used at any one time. Dual core processing has been around for many years, it all began with the co-processor used in the 286 systems from the dark ages of computing.

Windows itself was based on multi-tasking from its first conception.

The game client is in it'self a multi-tasking system, it carries out rendering, math computations, opens ports for downloading and communications between multi-servers, streaming music and movies, cache balancing, updating etc. I would be more concerned if your computers system was only running at 40% when your are playing a game such as Second Life with no apparent other programes running, I would logout and whip out the adware, virus checker and check ports open for trojans.

AWM your post is fine and all and much appreciated but the deeper issue here is,why should we lower our performance and reduce what we wear in SL?
The whole idea is to be able to wear what you want and to use these new comps to their fullest abilities. Not to reduce their performance.
Its simply not logical to have do these things. The real core of the issue is LL needs to either just tell everyone that their will be no (fix) and or cut loose some of the grants ($$) and get new better servers so we the players can utilize our comps in a positive way such as wearing what we want and setting our comps to their best abilities.

i agree.
SL's 512m video memory limit is only half of what my video card has.
and the game is not using all the ram it could be.

why limit the game to the lesser computer specs? let THOSE people lower their settings to play. this is why people buy nice computers...

and to suggest that we wear less on our own? these models are nothing compared to modern games. and what modern cards can handle.
i dont need to be told that "this is different" then normal games.

thats really a excuse on LL part that they didnt make the engine as well as they could have.

and if it cant be tweaked or fixed...then clearly SL is VERY outdated. and should be rebuilt on a proper fucntioning engine.

excuses and pushing the blame to us can only take you so far.
high end home computers and internets cant even play the game well, its pretty sad

Every 3D app and game I've *ever* run, has used 100% CPU. I don't see a point in limiting the performance of SL to have CPU cycles free that are just going to go to waste.
