Packet Loss

I don't get this so often, but the last day I have had so much "packet loss" with up to 14 percent (shown in the little window with the red or yellow or green bar indicator) that I have to ask what could be done to fix this.

Packet loss is supposed to be a client-side problem, correct? But if I don't *always* have it, then could there be server-related problems?

I do wonder when I constantly see this correlation:

I log-on, I don't show any packet loss.

I go to a very laggy sim, where the FPS is under 500, sometimes as low as like 89. Suddenly, while on that laggy sim, I see my packet loss jump up and go into the red.
So I have to wonder if the laggy sim is then inducing packet loss in me, if it works that way.

Then I teleport to another sim where it says 3500 on the FPS. I wait awhile, but my "packet loss problem" doesn't go away. I re-log, I come back to that fast sim with the good FPS, and no more packet loss problem.

I see people on my calling cards relogging dozens of times a night -- actually it's often more like one hundred times. I suspect they do this when packet loss makes them slow to a slide-show.

What can be done?

might also be your ISP having occasional slow downs or something wrong with a machine. most people go through a few of their ISP's computers before they get to the internet and then a few more before they get to LL's servers. there are alot of shared connections between us and SL.

thanks for the conspiracy theory but as far as me and people i know, it's not an issue. i never see packet loss for more than a flicker of yellow at the bottom of the scale as in less than 1% and usually not that much and i certainly don't see people i know relogging a hundred times a night. i don't doubt you guy(s) got a problem but "its happening to every one they just choose to say nothing" is less than accurate. :D

I have noticed the go-to-laggy-sim, go-to-unlaggy-sim, still-be-laggy phenomenon on two radically different machines through two wildly different ISPs.

Relog into unlaggy-sim, be unlaggy. So maybe the client has a memory leak? Anyone know a C/C++ program that doesn't? And if it is not in newview.exe, there are plenty of non-LL libraries that could be the cause. Prolly Microsoft's fault (as is world hunger and sorrow).

When I TP from a lagfest into a less crowded area, it generally takes me up to half a minute to see fluid motion again. But eventually I come unstuck. I find cursing at the monitor helps.

I always figured it was just residue from the former location's pipeline, gradually getting flushed out...but I spent all of fifteen seconds arriving at that buzzy-sounding little theory, and with absolutely no knowledge of the real system pragmatics.

In other words: please contact me in-game for my consulting rates.

some older routers/bandwidth limiters just start dropping packets to limit bandwidth. This is frequently the case with small providers and Schools. I'd say try lowering your bandwidth slider in your prefs.

This is a shot in the dark but you're not using a wireless connection with sp2 installed have you? SP2 conflicts with some adapter drivers.

Just wanted to say, I've never had a problem with packet loss either until the past couple days. Last night was especially bad for me and a couple of other ppl I know.

Assuming you're not on any kind of wireless connection, try increasing your maximum bandwidth to 1000. (Yes, seriously. Yes, I know how it's supposed to work. It doesn't.)
