Hello, I am shopping for a new graphics card, because my old one was made obsolute for SL a few updates back. Before I buy a new one, I would like to have some sort of assurance that the hardware requirements won't immediately and arbitrarily change after I make the investment in a new card (specifically for SL). How long are the system requirements listed here good for?

Unless you choose to buy old technology, the newer cards will be good. I could be wrong, but if SL ever switched from Open GL to DX10 (unlikely), we would mostly be screwed.

I find it interesting that SL still lists the GeForce 2 and ATI 8500 under minimum requirements. I know for a fact that the ATI 8500 could barely handle SL a year ago. This was before hardware lighting.

PC Minimum System Recommendations:
  1. Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL

  2. Computer Processor: 1.6GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon 2000+ or better

  3. Computer Memory: 512MB or better

  4. Video/Graphics Card**:
    1. nVidia GeForce FX 5600, GeForce 6600, or better
    2. OR ATI Radeon 9600, X600, or better

They rarly update this , so their system req is crap, if you run on the above spec youre looking at slideshow and chatting only if theres anyone near you.

here fixed

PC Minimum System Recommendations:
  1. Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL

  2. Computer Processor: 3.0GHz Pentium 4/Amd/FX or Dual/Quadcore

  3. Computer Memory: 2048MB or better

  4. Video/Graphics Card**:
    1. nVidia GeForce 6600, GeForce 7800, or better
    2. OR ATI Radeon X1950, or better

For now nvidia 6600/7800/7900 cards would do, SL isnt very advanced when it comes to gpu use yet, it does very little of what newer games do.
