Lately I've been having alot of trouble with SL, The game itself runs smoothly for me, no lag, or loading times.
but lately i noticed i crash lets say, every 5 minutes. the game doesnt freeze, no, it just shuts down my PC.
example: i log in and walk around, talk, build, whatever comes to mind, then BAM... PC turns off. now ive never ever had this problem before with SL, and its not like im doing anything specific, even when i just stand still and stare into the distance, after a certain time the game just crashes. i've also noticed that its not every sim. some sims i can just walk around normally for hours, even some highly primmed sims with lots of structures can play normally, but some empty sims, with about 1 house, can make my PC crash, so its not that either.
Anyway, tips are very welcome, i just want to play SL normal again hehe =P
Thanks in advance

this is a common symptom seen in ATI (AGP)based cards. This is the exact reason my ATI 9800 all in wonder is sitting in a rarely used computer collecting dust. Then again it may not be the video card itself but an overheating issue. Does this happen only in second life? Second Life puts a lot of strain on your video card and it may be showing a problem due to that stress. Usually when the a computer crashes to the desktop there is some form of a corrupted file inside the software. First thing to do would be to completely unload Second Life then reinstall the program from the download site. You would be surprised how often this curesmost problems in Second Life.
If this doesn't cure the problem, it would help a great deal if you were to post your system specifications, CPU, video card, memory, video driver versions, etc.. This will help folks narrow down what might be causing the problem.

SL cache and various files lays in C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\SecondLife Need to have enabled show hidden folders to see it tho. (tools / folder / view) Highly recommend min 1024+ ram for SL nowadays , its pretty much a huge diffrence ~.~ Anyhoo, see if that helps you

Im getting the same thing lately.
Except instead of a Shutdown, i get a video freeze, which criples my whole computer and forces me to reboot. SL is the ONLY game that can manage to do this..
The worst part is I cannot nail down exactly what causes it, for other games its possible to find out what causes the crash cause it usually happened in a same spot, but SL is so random its not good :\
it used to be random, but since the last update its been an every day occurance, and is actually deterring me from playing SL normally, or at all. :\
my system is AMD64-3500 GeForce 6800 128MB 2048MB RAM 400mhz 80GB HD/40GBHD 2.5MB DSL XP PRO SP1
Any one have any info about these problems? thanks in Advance.

Did you recently update your Catalyst drivers? that could have something to do with it.
I'm banking on the video card, especially considering you have another post above this one about AGP mode issues.

Video card problems _at worst_ might cause a lockup or spontaneous reboot. Actually switching the whole computer off is a different kettle of fish and probably indicates a power supply on the blink.
Note that whilst it's *likely* to be your actual hardware, there is a slim chance that the power supply from the grid in your area is not 100% robust. That might also explain the fact that seemingly nothing changed yet now you have problems. I don't know where you live but in some parts of the world extremely rapid brown-outs (ie voltage drops) are common.
My bet would be on a dodgy power supply/cable though. Try taking it into a PC repair shop and get them to look at it.

Just curious, do you have DSL. Just recently mine will crash when the phone rings. This has only started to happen in the last few weeks but doesn't happen all the time. Not quite as technical but just a thought.

My computer's also been giving me grief with SL freezing up my system... SL seems to be the ONLY piece of software on my machine that's doing this to me, despite how smoothly it runs. Now I'm not much of a harware person, but this is what I know is in my machine:
Pentium 4 3 GHz 2.5 GB of RAM Radeon 9600XT 128 MB
Also, I'm running Win XP Pro with SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please reply ASAP!

the hassle i have gone through with my ATI
02-21-2006 22:30
I have a radeon 9550 which has worked great since i started paying in november. After the last update, however, I have not been able to play sl hardly at all. Much like you it crashes anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes into the game. About a dozen emails and talks with the head tech from sl I was told that it is sl is not compatable with either the drivers or the video card anymore (not in those words exactly i think he was trying to sugar coat it). And he specified video card was most likely it cuz they focus more on nvidia when they make the game. I tried everything they told me to do including rolling back the drivers to the ones i had when i could still play and nothing has changed. I think the whole thing sucks cuz now it is either buy a new video card, borrow a freind's pc, or quit the game! So i have resolved that the programmers suck by not making it freindly to ATI and that soon i may need to buy a nvidia video card. I wish you luck cuz i had none either and the last email i sent the lindens got no reply so i am assuming they are out of ideas and ignoring me.

I run SL fine on my Mobility Radeon 9600... Have any of you tried the Omega Radeon drivers at http://www.omegadrivers.net/ ? I get better performance with them over the standard ATI drivers and no stability problems whatsoever.

i tried the omega drivers and i do like them better than the ati ones so ty for sharing them however it did not help the sl crashies. although while i am in sl before the crash it runs more smooth hehe, but i still can't stay in the game more than a minute or two.

have you disabled AGP fast writes? that usually fixes a lot of my mysterious crashing problems. you could also try unchecking AGP mode in SL and see if that helps any.
does it give you any errors or does it just freeze up?

What gives

Is SL Dieing ?? this constant crashing rezzing issues and lag are getting to be too much to justify the price LL wants to charge for sims. And there lack of responce is not making things any better
