In my living room computer which I don't make much use of, the Radeon 9000 in it worked prior to 1.6.3, but SL now refuses to run , contending the device is now considered "Generic GDI"

I tried updating the video drivers from the ati website, but the same result is produced.

I tried the omega drivers, and the same result occured.

I tried a system restore to before the installation of 1.6.3, then reinstalled 1.6.3, the same result occured.

Should I just get a cheap Nvidia card and toss the 9000 out the door?

Now SL tries to run but crashes as soon as it gets inworld.

This is with Omega drivers installed. It no longer gives the generic GDI message. It locks the computer up completely requiring use of the power switch to reboot.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Have you tried turning off shadows? I hate to keep repeating that in every "I'm crashing" thread, but it really is the leading killer right now.

Power Supply Fan!
04-23-2005 01:08
The living room computer, I have now discovered, has a bad power supply fan. Assuming it went through a period of decreasing performance before stopping the timing would coincide with the video problems and installation of 1.6.3; I hadn't used that machine for SL for a while. So now I have to decide if I want to try to replace the fan or the whole power supply. I have never removed a power supply before, but I can probably get it out and do a fan replacement. I won't like doing it but it would save a bunch of money. So tomorrow I will get to try something new.

With the case side removed, the computer decided it would run SL at least a few minutes.

So I am reasonably hopeful the fan may have been the cause.

What is the wattage of this power supply? If its 350 watts or less, I'd consider ditching it and upgrading. Fixing an older power supply is just delaying the inevitable.

I just upgraded to a 550 watt Antec because my GeForce 6600GT was taxing the system. Most users won't need 550 watts, but these days even machines with lesser video cards are very power hungry.

Hi Teeny - I did just what you said before I read your message.

The power supply with the bad fan was an Antec 300 watt.

Upon looking at the way the case is constructed I decided that I didn't really want to open the case up. even though a five or ten dollar fan would probably have worked fine.

Instead I got the Antec 350 watt power supply for 60 bucks at Circuit City. The old one had a single fan, the new one has a double fan and the additional intake fan is right over the CPU fan.

The cabling and connectors have so many wires it looks like you might have to do some thinking or understand what you are doing but this is largely an illusion. The quantity of wires is irrelevant to start with because they go to connectors. The quantity and type of connectors is deceptive although relevant because most of the connectors are not used at all. So replacing the power supply turned out to totally easy.

I have now, on various systems, replaced a case fan, a power supply, upgraded memory, replaced cd drives, sound cards, installed different operating systems.

Maybe I should build one from pieces, I have wanted to do it for a long time., just afraid to spend the money and fail, but it would be nice to have a machine where you had all the boxes and manuals for all the parts like a real computer person would.

Oh yeah, back to the SL aspect of this: SL seems to be running fine now. I haven't heard any complaints from the person using it.

You definitely should! It's a good way to get exactly what you need and nothing extra, and better yet, nothing INFERIOR. If you build a computer yourself, you can be assured that everything is as it should be.

Good choice on the Antec PSU, by the way.

back to the issue of video cards...

get to the graphics config window (right-click your desktop, select Properties)

Select the "Settings" tab

Select the "Advanced" button

Select the "Troubleshoot" tab

make sure the slider is at full (all the way to the right)

when a program (accidentally) turns off accel, programs read the card as "Generic"

I deal with this problem all the time in my university's lab machines
