I've tried numerous times to connect to the grid, but when I try, it stops at "Waiting for region handshake" and then goes back to the main screen with a box that says "Unable to Connect. Login packet never recieved by login server. PLease try again in a few minutes." And at the bottom, it shows the in game menu and "Stand Up", even though I wasn't standing at the time it crashed.
It's been hours since this first happened.
Does this mean I need to reinstall? Has this happened to everyone in the region at that time?
Help, please.
((And yes, it allows me to take a snapshot of the main screen.))

I'm having the same problem. I registered today to SL and spent 4 hours already trying to make it work. In 70% of the cases it stops at the region handshake and says 'Login packet never received...', 10% of the other cases it says it cannot locate the server userserver.agni.lindenlab.com, and the other 20% is just a plain crash on startup. If the latter two happens, it basically kills the DNS services my system and I cannot access any page until I reinitialize my network adapter.
I tried reinstall, switched off all my firewalls and set NAT to point all ports to my computer (which resulted in a worm coming in in the next minute). When I got rid of the worm, attempted some more configuration ideas then given up. What I didn't do is to set 55 ports needed to pass through NAT because 1. it didn't work when I forwarded all ports 2. I can add NAT forwarding ports to my router only one-by-one.
I can play any other network game. I'm a programmer and although I'm not a network systems expert I can do basic firewall and router configuration. I never seen a game that needs so advanced configuration to work.
I guess Second Life is designed for professional people with a degree in computer network systems. Half of the world is behind NAT routers, if the game cannot be played without putting my computer naked on the net, then no thanks, I won't take that risk.

From the sounds of it, your OS and/or drivers are hosed somehow, and you may need to reinstall it/them. You may also have a virus/trojan. There's no reason SL crashing should wipe out your network settings. From: someone I can play any other network game. I'm a programmer and although I'm not a network systems expert I can do basic firewall and router configuration. I never seen a game that needs so advanced configuration to work. SL doesn't require any advanced network configuration to work. In fact, its requirements are quite basic. Make sure your computer is OK (if you just got a worm, then you REALLY need to recheck your computer with every tool you can to make SURE it is gone), then set your NAT/firewall settings to reasonable defaults. If you are getting a worm through a NAT, I would be REALLY surprised. From: someone I guess Second Life is designed for professional people with a degree in computer network systems. Half of the world is behind NAT routers, if the game cannot be played without putting my computer naked on the net, then no thanks, I won't take that risk. I'm behind a NAT, and I haven't had any problems; I know quite a number of people playing are also using NAT/PAT routers to play, and they aren't having any problems. SL can EASILY be played without your computer having a public IP address and no firewalling. You just have to make sure you have it set up correctly, and do NOT have any malicious or misconfigured software on your computer causing problems. If you can give some more detailed info, perhaps we can help you out a bit more. Things like, your computer specs, network setup, what other software you are running. Are you running a software firewall on your computer? etc.

Hello,
My computer is still not perfectly stable so I will reinstall it. Virus and adware scanners found nothing though.
I may give it another shot after reinstalling the system but I surely won't open my firewall again. Although I'm quite sure I tried everything to make it work. I have a Thomson Speedtouch 530 ADSL modem and I have set the default server to my internal IP which basically means I turned off NAT. I also have ZoneAlarm which I have shut down. So my box was on the net without any kind of protection (that's why I got the worm) but SL still didn't run.
From the FAQ, it seemed to me that SL uses push technology and that's why I need to allow ports to pass through NAT. Isn't it the case? If all requests are originated by the client then NAT knows where to forward the answer so I shouldn't need to set anything.
System: Win2K SP4, 1.8 GHz P4, 768MB RAM, nVidia 6600 GT. Can't think of any software interfering with SL and as I mentioned earlier, I can play any other net game, e.g. UT2004.

After installing WinXP SP2, everything seems to work fine. Thanks all for your help.
