Can't be online at the same time as a friend...

Me and a friend are on the same home network, he uses windows, I use linux running SL under cvs cedega. Previously we were able to be on the same sim at the same time, but tonight if he was in the rainbow tiger and every time I tried to teleport to him, he'd stop being able to move, and my teleport wouldn't complete. We'd both logoff, I'd login and be in the rainbow tiger but then wouldn't be able to move or teleport out (I'm assuming at that point he's attempting to login himself at that point.) I was able to get someone to teleport me out once, but that was after he gave up trying to get online for a bit.
Any ideas what's causing this? The 1.8, linux, or just a weird moment in cyberspace?

You might want to try using the -port command line switch on the windows machine, as described in this thread.

Hmm, we tried that, he stuck himself on port 13001 and could walk around the sim just fine up until I tried logging in. Sorry, no luck. :-(

EDIT: I had to set my firewall settings to open ports 12999 through 13001 for the computer running -port 13001

Issue Resolved.
