Textures randomly switching

I have an odd issue on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, Omega drivers). Every so often, a bunch of textures on the screen decide to swap themselves out for some other texture.

This occurs on objects, land, and avatars. When it happens, many things on my screen will all be using some random existing texture or snapshot. To clear it up I hit ALT-ENTER to swap from windowed mode to full screen, or vice versa. This is a temporary fix though, since it eventually happens again.

This does not occur when I use my desktop (NVIDIA card).

Any clues?

Hmmm, have you checked your temperatures? The card or system may be running hot. Open the case and blow a fan into if if you can and see if this helps. This is assuming you have all the latest drivers and such for your motherboard, graphics card, sound etc and you have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SL.

You know, I've had this issue a couple times, too. The first time I noticed it, it went away after a few seconds, but the second time it happened, I had to relog. It was like somebody imposed a screenshot over my AV or pulled textures and pasted them on another AV.

I've use an nVidia card, thou, and it's only happened twice, to my recollection.

I installed the latest drivers and reinstalled SL, and it still happens on ocassion. It could be an overheating thing, but being a laptop, I can't open it up and add more fans.

I also tried underclocking my graphics card, but I still see the problem, albeit it is less prominent.

It's not just you, Driftwood, happens to me all the time. Since 2-3 updates ago. I'll even log off and come back the next day to find sevearl of my prim textures changed back to old textures they used to be. No acknowledgement whatsoever from any Linden. As usual.

How much memory does the laptop video card have Driftwood? Have you tried running SL with a lower setting in Preferences->Adv. Graphics->Video Card Memory? Is there any place in SL where you experience this more than other places? Does it still occur if Shiny is off, Avatar Rendering is normal and Avatar Vertex Programs are off?

If you can track down a feature or set of features that causes this to happen, or just causes it to happen quicker or more frequently, it will be easier to track down the bug to fix. It sounds like it happens in both windowed and full screen modes? Lastly, are you running any other graphics or memory intensive programs in addition to SL when this happens?

Aaron, unless I am misreading Driftwood's problem his issue is different than yours. He is talking about a temporary, client side only glitch that is over-writing some of his texture memory so he sees incorrect textures. 'Temporary' because switching from full to windowed or visa versa, and I assume restarting SL, 'fixes' the textures. This is probably because a screen mode switch I believe triggers a rebuild of the texture memory.

Your issue sounds very different in that somehow textures you have set on objects get reverted on the simulator. I'm not sure what could cause that short of a sim roll back which happens very infrequently. If you have any information on a repro, the exact objects it happens to or other circumstances to help us track it down please email bugs@secondlife.com or me (kelly@lindenlab.com).

My memory card has 128MB.

I have tried lowering the memory to 64MB in the SL settings.

I will try changing other preferences (shiny, etc). On my laptop, though, I pretty much lower everything except shiny and avatar vertex program and object details.

This occurs everywhere. No particular location is better or worse.

Sometimes, when this happens, if I zoom in or out the textures revert back to the correct ones for a second, but go back to the wrong ones quickly.

I try not to run anything else in the background and it still happens. And yes, it does occur in both windowed and full screen modes. That's why I can switch from one to the other to fix it.
