Not sure whether this is the right forum to post this in, but a non-forum-using friend of mine has had a spybot/spy parasite following her avatar around. Is there any sure way of getting rid of these things?

Teleporting to a different region should do it.

That could be Abuse Reportable, by the way, harassment with a scripted object....

Spybots are basically followers that sensor your position and move to that posisition.
The easy way to get rid of a spy bot is to simply teleport away as objects can't teleport. Though the spybot may be still in that location and waits for you if you teleport back. Most spybots have a timeout after they have lost their target.
Another way is to be simply fast enough and trick the spybot movement to shake it off. This can be done by being fast enough to leave the 96m sensor limit and by changing your direction to fool the spybot movement. For this way you need some kind of speed enhancer.

well....it's voyeurism...or the audio/chat equivalent. Is that abuse?

And you can't keep teleporting around or rushing away at high speed if you are not even sure not it's there. Is there a detector of such things maybe?

If it's invisible, you can enable Show Transparent (ctrl-alt-T) and you should be able to see it as a red outline.

Definitely. Well, unless it's consensual of course.

I've just taken a look at these spy devices on slexchange. They work from up to 96m away listening to named avatars, and are very small....I don't think highlighting transparent will work.

There is, however, a sim scanner on slexchange, which lists scripted objects in a sim with their owner's name!

It could be a market niche to produce a device that knows the object names of the commonly used spybots and only scans for them. And I think it would be good manners if spybot creators provide their spybot object names so that everyone who wants to defend his privacy is able to do so.
A business could be to sell the two devices, spybot and spybot defender, to both parties. So both can draw a lot of resources for this kind of stuff.
