How about a thread completely unrelated to the UPDATE! Woohoo!
I'm having a problem taking movies in SL.
When I click file, and Start/Stop Movie to Disk... The game brings up the file dialog. I tell it to save as SLMovie.AVI on my desktop.
I move around for 30 seconds or so, make a little test movie, and then click file, Start/Stop Movie again.
I then check my desktop, nothing. Do a search for the file, nothing. Search my whole HDD for all AVI's. No recently created AVI.
What am I doing wrong?

When making a movie using fraps or the ingame editor is there a way to turn off the UI and other items that clutter the screen..including the top menu bar so u capture just a clear shot?

I'm having the exact same problem (as the original poster) and would love to know if you found a solution and what it was? Thanks!
(added) ... and if anyone at all knows the solution or has general tips to share. Thanks all!

to anyone with similar challenges, I found this link from the sl home page. http://secondlife.com/machinima/I switched to another computer and it worked. Seems the issue was the codecs (see Eric Linden's white paper).
