Hi I'm new to second life. I recently purchased a copy of nicecast to use in second life. So I could stream music to a few of my friends while we talk. But for some reason in sl I can't hear the music. I was wondering if any one has experienced this with nicecast or any other mp3 streaming software, and if so what did you do to fix it?

I've mainly used Nicecast to broadcast to Live365, but I did try it directly broadcasting to a plot once.

If you're using the built in streaming server in Nicecast, you'll need to make sure it is reachable from the outside world. You'll need to adjust your firewall/router settings so that the port it is running on is mapped from the external IP address to the machine that Nicecast is running on. The server info and setup window for Nicecast should give you the information you need to set this up.

My room mate set up the firewall. My friends could connect with win amp and itunes. Just not with sl. Sl ether times out instantly or thinks it's playing, but I can't hear it, and the streaming program says it's not connected.

Are you formatting the link correctly in SL? It should be something like http://99.999.99.0:8000 (http:<my_ip_addy>:<port_number>;) Make sure the link doesn't have .pls at the end of it.

Your problem is that you are trying to access your public nat'd address from the private network behind the firewall. It's kinda like trying to walk IN your front door from inside your house. You basically have 2 choices:

1. Setup a DNS zone for your stream. This would allow you to edit your hosts file so that you (and only you) resolve the name to your private IP. Everyone else would do a normal lookup and find your public IP.

2. Just simply listen to your stream in winamp instead. You can find your private IP by going to your start menu, choosing 'Run' and typing 'cmd' to get a command prompt. Then type in 'ipconfig'. This will get you your IP, and you can simply tune in with winamp.

Hope that helps...
