Network Issue - Desperate to get into SL- any ideas?

I am stuck in a hotel for the next 3 days, and I cannot get SL to connect. I was able to connect just fine from my last 2 hotels, so I am fairly confident that my PC is configured properly.

Here's what I have done so far:

Tried to start the SL client. It gets as far as "Verifying Protocol Version" and then stops with "Unable to connect..."

I called up the hotel's ISP and asked them if they blocked any ports. They assured me that they did not. I even talked directly to the tech guy and reviewed the list of ports with him. He was confident that they were all open.

Next I ran Wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/) to see where the packets were getting lost. The client locates the IP address for util.agni.lindenlab.com and it sends a packet to port 12036. Nothing comes back and after a 5 second timeout it retries a couple of times and then gives up.

It appears that the server isn't responding, but that the packet is getting through (I am pretty sure that I would see a different mesage from Wireshark if the connection was blocked or otherwise refused).

Desperate for my fix of SL, I located a tool called Snowcrash (linked from http://labs.highenergychemistry.com/slprotocol/index.php?title=Main_Page) . I started Snowcrash and then restarted the client.

Here's what it shows me:

INFO: Resolving Agni userserver domain name userserver.agni.lindenlab.com
INFO: LL_WM_HOST_RESOLVED
INFO: ...Userserver resolved to 66.150.244.151:12036
INFO: LLCircuit::addCircuitData for 66.150.244.151:12036
INFO: Verifying message template...
INFO: Resending on timeout

I did manage to convince the ISP that I have a critical business need here, and that for the $30 per day that I am paying for this connection I really should be able to run anything that I want. He agreed and would probably make any reasonable changes if it would help me out.

What can I try next, or what can I ask him to change? Any and all ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

eh only thing i could think of is firewall / something autoblocking incomming packets, and SL uses udp not tcp another thing that easier for autoblocking progs to sniff out at suspect activity (know mine sure kicks up -.-";)

Yeah, it sounds like the hotel's router is filtering you out.

Since your outgoing connexion works, likely it's their firewall blocking a specific protocol incoming - this is not unheard of, since they may have it configured to block p2p programmes based on the formation of their UDP packets. If so, an external proxy isn't going to help much unless you tunnel everything through a two-part HTTP proxy. Even so, you'd need to have such a thing set up before leaving ...

There's also the possibility that an intervening ISP has a configuration/routing problem - but finding that out is /nigh on/ impossible.

Thanks for all of the replies.

It is really a shame there's no way to run SL over a proxy that uses only port 80, even if at some reduced level of efficiency. I use in-room internet in a lot of hotels and this is the only port that I can really count on.

In addition to this, getting corporate firewall admins to open up a wide range of new ports in support of SL isn't the easiest thing in the world either.
