Hi, I started my Second Life recently and just discovered earlier today that being stuck in constant blurry low-res texture mode, unless I move my mouse pointer specifically over something, is not the norm. Everything is low-res for me, unless I edit it, click on it, or put my mouse pointer over it, and even then it doesn't load the high-res version one out of four times approximately.
For the record, I'm running the absolute latest everything, driver, hardware, you name it. Dual 7900 gtx's (although in window mode only one us used), 4 gigs of ram, quad Opteron workstation (dual 270's), latest drivers for sound, video, chipset, CPU's, SCSI controllers, SATA controllers, everything. My connection is commercial grade dedicated cable with 5 megabits down and 1.5 up.
When entering a new area, items load but stop at the low-res mode, leaving buildings smudges, people with wings looking like they've attached random garbage to their backs, and lots and LOTS of transparent textures that appear as gray panes through which I can't see (which REALLY sucks, especially if they're behind something else and therefore can't be interacted with via the mouse).
Please tell me there's hope for me. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Watching the statistics, I note that I stop having 'Pending Downloads' well before all but the few objects I specifically place my mouse pointer on have updated, leaving buildings smudges, people with wings looking like they've attached random garbage to their backs, lots and LOTS of transparent textures that appear as gray panes through which I can't see (which REALLY sucks, especially if they're behind something else and therefore can't be interacted with via the mouse). In particular, Draw Distance can cause a lot of problems if it is set too high. P2

I have also noticed this. But not right away. It is usually after I have been in SL for a while. Then things start to get fuzzy/low rez. Even if I have already loaded the texure. When I first log in it is fine and everything rezes nice and sharp. But after a hour or two I start seeing this problem.

Update on this:
Using my laptop, nVidia Geforce Go 6800 w/ 256 megs, windows xp, 2 gigs of ram, intel centrino 1700, with default graphics configuration this problem doesn't occur. Unfortunately I'm out of town on business so I don't have access to my work station to test changing the view distance (which I DID increase). I did play around with it, but I couldn't remember the default setting which I can now pull from the laptop. I'll test it again as soon as I get back from this trip, which probably won't be until late Friday/early Saturday.
Thanks for the suggestion in any case.

Stuck in low rez texture heck too
06-18-2006 15:23
I too thought that was just the way it is... until one day I must have caught it just right, and everything rezzed right away for me... but went blurry a split second later.
No matter how long I wait, I will not get anything but a very blurry texture until I either click or point at an object, and then 3 out 4 times it will load very slowly (sometimes not at all). My bandwidth is fine, and I've played from several different locations (laptop). Please help me, I can't stand having to point at everything in any area I enter just to get the view to redownload everything and display it correctly.
Thank you, Bree B.

I seem to have this problem more now with the last update, but I don't have anything to back that comment up.

I have noticed that if I dump my cache everything comes in fast (even faster than if it is in my cache....figgure THAT one out) and clear UNTIL it starts using the cache. At that point it seems reluant to load textures fully. Also a relog will help for a while, then the same old problem comes up.

Further experiments has revealed that textures on prims load fast the first time per session (log in) but after that they are reluctant to load fully, and if they do it is very very slow. It does not seem to make any difference if I dump cache or not, other than the textures are slightly slower to display (loading from the server I assume). Sometimes the textures will rez fully then go blurry after a second, and at times repeating this cycle of sharp-blurry several times. Of course putting your pointer on a texture will get it load and stay, until you leave the area that and return again.
I am wondering if SL is not refreshing the texture memory (or something) properly as it loads fine the first time but afterworlds that texture is reluctant to reload

i tried reinstalling SL and updating my video drivers, and nothing has changed. This is aweful, hasn't anyone figured out what this is yet? Are the linden's aware of it?

I assume they are, I have sent several bug reports. I would sugest you do the same. I have talked to many people and everyone one of them are encountering the same problem. I seen "this person logged off" then a few seconds later "same person logged in", and the main reason for it is either crashes or to deal with the blurry prim texture problem (which seems to happen far more often).

Don't think this has been said in this thread. So here go's...
Especially with Nvidia cards make sure Bump+Cloth is NOT checked.
Also try with and without 'Avatar Virtex Shader'

No I don't think it has been mentioned either. And in my case, it already is off and does not make a difference (I have all the extra features off).

I have been doing lots of experiments, and apparently if I turn off object to object occlusion (if you have debug menu on, press ctrl-shift-o) I no longer have this low resolution texture problem. Of course you have to turn it off everytime you log on, but at least for me this seems to fix the blurry texture problem.
I should also note that this does not help if the area has already rezed. If you are seeing low resolution textures, you need to turn off occlusion then teleport somewhere and telport back (or fly out of the area and back again).
