I have a GeForce4 TI 4200 graphic card which supports pixel shading according to NVidia. Yet the rippled water option in my preferences is grayed out. Anybody has an idea what the problem could be?
Pentium4, 2.4 Mhz 1 GB RAM GeForce4 TI 4200 (neuest driver) DirectX 9.0c Win2000 Pro, SP3
Thanks!

Your video card doesn't support OpenGL's Pixel Shader which SL complies with maybe DirectX 8 (when your card was made), but not this one, you need to upgrade to the next gen at least to get it, either a FX5200 or higher(Nvidia) or a Radeon 9500 or higher (ATI)

With that 4200 do not upgrade to a 5200 as it isn't an upgrade. You will have a few extra goodies but performance will be less than the 4200. This is why the 5200 wasn't a success for Nvidia.

Ahh, a fellow TI4200 user ^^
Yes, sadly I've tried everything to get water rippling to work. Updated drivers, checking for firmware, human sacrifices...
The TI4200 cards do not support pixel shading. Period.
But seeing as though mine runs HalfLife 2 well enough I have no major complaints. And if it runs HalfLife 2... then I'm hoping it'll run Phantasy Star Universe. Though I may scrounge up the cash and hopefully do a little upgrading.
I plan to get next a new video card, though I haven't a clue as to what I should get...

The logical upgrade path for a Ti4200 would be a Nvidia GeForce 6600GT on the cheap, AGP likely if you have an older system. It is the clear-cut successor to the price-performance ratio of the trusty Ti4200. A 6600GT should cost no more than US$150, with some on sale going as low as US$125 (and perhaps possibly even lower if there are deals I've missed!). It's a big bang for the buck and a really noticeable performance difference, according to other Resis I've talked to who've followed this upgrade path.
There is a new AGP version of the even faster—especially at high resolutions with lots of antialiasing for that extrasweet smoothness—and somewhat costlier 6800GS, but it may be bottlenecked badly on an older system so you can't use it to its full potential.
If anyone has more personal experiences with these, I'd lurve to hear 'em!

Glad to hear you say that Torley since I have a ti4200 and just ordered a 6600gt a couple of days ago from Newegg, though for $151. The cheaper ones had scary things in the reviews. This is one from Leadtek that no one had anything bad to say about.
