Hi there,

Sorry I know this isn't quite the right section, but I can't see anywhere to hold this discussion. I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give in answer to these questions.

I am seriously considering buying an island but would like the advice of people who have actually done this.

So as far as I understand, please correct me if wrong, thats what this thread is all about, its about 1600 USD to buy a private island. 295 USD a month fees to linden lab. I hear I can raise 500 USD a month in fees and make 200 USD clear profit. Island owners - has this been your experience?

I was thinking of deeding the island to my group (I already have a mall deeded to my group on the mainland, but its just a group for admin purposes and to get that 10 per cent extra land).

After I have parcelled off the SIM (with roads still owned by my group, the prims from that land going as extra prims to the parcels on sale) how much does this land sell for? I have seen land on islands going for 1 linden, so obviously getting the fees in more important to some, I would like to think I could initially sell the land for something more than that though.

Even if I allow buyers to resell land - can I reclaim at any time?

Is there a automatic land tab way of collecting monthly fees without having to resort to using a rental box on each parcel (and keeping a database of who has paid etc)?

Also, if I start off with one private SIM (island), and decide later to buy another, can I just get linden to add it next to the one I already have? If that is not possible for whatever reason can Linden move my first island on the grid to be somewhere with my second island so they are together? I'd like to think I could scale up in number of islands over time and keep them all together if I so wish.

Thanx for your time!

R :)

Hi there,
...I would like to think I could initially sell the land for something more than that though.
That depends upon your reputation, and the quality of the island build. See the Resident Answers forum for threads on 'Private Island Sell'. The fairness of this is often debated.
Even if I allow buyers to resell land - can I reclaim at any time?
Yes. You can sneeze one day with your finger on the mouse and reclaim all lands at any time. 'YOU' have ultimate power on your island. This can work really well. It can also create fraudulent situations. (see answer above). Tenants on a Private Island rarely feel as if they 'own'.
Is there a automatic land tab way of collecting monthly fees without having to resort to using a rental box on each parcel (and keeping a database of who has paid etc)?
I use one of those popular rental box systems. There's another system (iPez?) that uses a single 'signboard' for collections. Both send out notices to renters who fall behind.
Also, if I start off with one private SIM (island), and decide later to buy another, can I just get linden to add it next to the one I already have?
Yes. They promise not to put anyone else's island up against yours. So you should always have some space for expansion.
If that is not possible for whatever reason can Linden move my first island on the grid to be somewhere with my second island so they are together?
Yes. If you MOVE your island at the same time you buy your 2nd, there's no charge. Island moves without a purchase are $150 US per island.
I'd like to think I could scale up in number of islands over time and keep them all together if I so wish.

Thanx for your time!
You're welcome!

now i have a question to add to it

i know all the pro`s, better support, ultimate control etc BUT:

when sl is running smoothly, most of the islands i go to are laggier then my home, even if they are just residential

i live in drakul with is on the southern class5 continent(as far as i understood), even if all is running fine, there are island wich just refuse to be tp`d out of wich i need to tp home befor tp`ing to another island

this alone makes me wonder if the ultimate control is worth the hassle as i never have tp issue`s unless it`s just sl moaning

Thanx for all the help on this issue, it has helped, a lot to take in though. I think I have figured out that I could divide my island up like a green SIM and make 160 USD profit a month after fees if all parcels are rented.

For a 1024 parcel I would charge 15 USD a month rental, for non-premium members this would mean a saving of 2.00 USD, not much, but it means I can undercut LINDEN and that may appeal to people.

Assuming non-premium members can buy land from a private island and not have to pay the 9.95 USD a month?

I think I will keep my sim totally residental and think about doing a commercial SIM at a later date if successful.
