I don't mean the new lighting itself but the backgrounds around it. Are they supposed to flash off and on? My walls are going crazy!

This sounds abnormal. I'm going to move this to Technical Issues so anyone else having the same problem can reply.

More details about what Graphics settings you're using in Preferences would help too, as well as if the flickering went away when you turned some of them off (e.g. set Lighting Detail to Sun and Moon Only).

What you describe hasn't happened to me yet--at brief periods, I'll get a "flicker" of light across my screen which I haven't determined the source of yet. But I'll keep looking.

Oops Torley :D I found out the flashing is coming from a neighbor's strobe light thing.

I will leave this thread here as a monument to my ignorance.

I always have the background flash, IF I have an IM window open, such as Yahoo or AIM.

The flashing IS indeed an issue since the patch. It's something in the new lighting engine and seems to mainly be effecting people using nVidia Cards (as 2 of my 3 machines have this problem) The ONLY solution I've found is you have to go to your display properties->Display->Advanced->GeForceblahblahblah->Quality settings and turn your quality/performance setting up higher. I was running my machines on performance and once I moved to 3/4 Quality the flashing 'Seems' to have vanished. You *May* also have to turn off application controlled AntiAliasing and Anistropic Filtering and turn them on yourself.

All this lowers your frame rate, but again.. *SEEMS* to fix the flickering.

PS: Full Bright prims, angle of camera view, and time of day lighting all play a factor in the intensity of the flickering too. My GeForce 7600GT (PCI Express) card in my newest machine has NONE of the flickering problems ...
