All the games with better graphics and fancy engines (Unreal3, Source, Crytek, etc.) have a huge "unfair advantage" - the world either doesn't change, or only changes in ways the game creators intentionally make happen.

For example, in Planetside (an MMO-combat game by Sony) you can see for miles and fly at very high framerates, because you've already downloaded the entire game world as part of their massive game-installer package. You can only encounter the vehicles provided by the developers, people can only be wearing/carrying the stuff that the developers made (armour, MAX suits, etc.). You can't decide to take a break and build a popcorn stand or gothic cathedral in a quiet corner of the map.

Because the SL world is completely dynamic and streamed to the client as you go, this simply can't be done in SL - some improvements were added client-side a while ago, though.

You couldn't bolt U3 or any other "outside" 3d game engine on to SL even if you wanted to. That said, the client source is Open, so feel free to try if you'd like to prove me wrong :D

Yea, see the thread here:

The unreal 3 engine just makes me drool, and these will only improve as time goes on. SL really needs to figure out a revolutionary way to use a modern engine with all this dynamic content. Sure what we have now is ugly and outdated, but its almost tolerable, in two years? I doubt it.

Ugly and Outdated????

I beg to differ!

I think Sl is beautiful, fantastic and a shear pleasure to exist in!

My expectations are met and exceeded every time I enter the world.

I'm not interested in blowing things up, shooting people or driving a racecar.

I AM interested in talking to people, enjoying the scenery and exploring the different sims.

I would love to have "better" avatar shape control, skirts that actually fit and t shirts that look good on girls with real curves.

We clearly have different desires and expectations, and that fine.

But ugly and outdated? Not to me!

In comparison with current release mmorpgs, simply by the level that its possible with modern engines SL is outdated. Granted LL and the SL community have done an amazing job making the most of it for what it is, I agree, but sooooo much more is possible. So OK, some is not ugly after you find all the creations that are beautiful, but a new user is pretty much initiated with the ugly stick.

Still, just because the Unreal engine is mentioned, does not mean that the comparison has anything to do with combat or vehicles, it simply provides a platform for a richer environment physically and graphically.
