Is anyone able to set their cache size to 50MB on the Windows SL client? If I attempt to, my viewer will inevitably stop responding, the log indicating some sort of Kakadu error. It's reproducable, setting cache to 50MB and restarting wil crash within 10 minutes. Setting cache to 500MB or greater will solve it.
Deleting the existing cache, etc, has no apparent effect.

This sounds more wack than ice cream that doesn't melt and tastes like sawdust.
Okay si... next time I'm inworld (which should be... uh... soon) I'm gonna give this a whirligig, and post my results here.

si, I've been exploring well over 10 min with a 50MB cache and haven't crashed yet, so I haven't been able to reproduce the experience you've had. Is there anything else I need to do?

Well SL's cache may not work like this, but maybe you have more RAM than si and it's using that instead of the hard drive cache, so you're not running into the issue (as fast?) If SL just dumps everything it downloads into the hard drive cache automatically that wouldn't be the case though.
Why do you want it that low anyway? That short on space?

But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

I actually have 1.5GB of RAM -- it works just fine when I run at a disk cache of 500MB or greater. However, i'm able to reproduce this very well using either 50MB or 200MB. I'm not sure how to interpret the Kakadu errors that i'm seeing when it happens. To provide an exact line of steps I do which causes this:
While running SL, preferences, set disk cache to 50MB. Close SL Delete cache folder (if you don't do this, your cache size doesn't actually change -- good to note!) Restart SL. Walk into any texture-rich environment (Umber works wonderfully). SL will run very very fast for a few minutes, and then it will freeze completely.
My problem is that it seems disk cache actually slows the living crap out of SL. When I start SL in a place like Umber, I see about 21-26fps. As I play over the course of maybe 30 minutes, it will drop to an inconsistent 10-24fps or so. After an hour or two, i'm even more inconsistent, and see strange FPS behavior down as far as 0.5fps then jumping back up to 20s.
If I wipe out my cache, and restart SL, I jump up to about 45-60fps. After everything loads, i'm still steady at 35-40fps for a decent amount of time. After a couple hours, I get to the point of the previous paragraph, however.
My goal in this was to eliminate the disk cache as much as I can. I don't need it, it doesn't benefit me. I have a fast enough internet connection that I can live with downloading all the relevant information for areas that would normally be cached each time I log on/teleport. I would actually prefer to turn the disk cache off entirely, but it's not an option.

Thanks for the info, si -- I may try again when I have another opportunity.

From: Torley Torgeson (really, who is running SL on a 500MB hard drive?) Me. Well, it's a 1.5GB partition, but once you install Win98SE and a few essential utilities, there's precious little space left.

Wow, and now I know. Did you have a special usage needed for that configuration? And have you ever had problems like si is describing? I've been unable to get my SL to freeze on a 50MB cache thus far... hmmm...

So, I re-installed SL just to make sure I had a clean slate. Set everything up, set cache size to 50MB.
As soon as I log in, I see the message:
WARNING VFS: Attempt to write to location 0 in file <key> type 0 of length 0
That scrolls over and over and over for about 5 minutes, until I hit WARNING KDU throwing an exception WARNING Unable to setData() for image <key> WARNING Aborting set of formatted image INFO Code-stream must start with an SOC marker!
Then I hit a low CPU hang.

have you run scandisk, and defragmented? It's unlikly to hurt things, and may fix subtle problems contributing to this.

Actually I use XP's lovely screensaver background disk optimization option to keep the drive defragmented. As far as errors, NTFS in XP is a journalled FS, no real potential for that to be the problem, but I did just for grins, and no errors. This also occurs on 2 separate systems.
