Contacts list stuck in "(waiting)"

I am logged on for over 20 minutes, and seem to be interacting with the world normally. But I can not see whether any fiends are online, because the Contacts list just has (waiting) in it instead of names.

Perhaps I should be doing something differently to resolve this?

When that happens, I pick one of the half-filled entries and quickly check/uncheck the "can find me on the world map" box. That will force it to refresh.
