new internet connection (wireless router), connection issues

OK, this is a weird problem. I've been using SL on a Dell XPS 710 Dual Core with a 256MB nVidia graphics card using a cable modem (10MB connection speed). Everything was working awesome, super fast page loading, no delay in video, smooth animation, etc., etc..

Then I moved and my troubles began. I got a new internet connection with the same company, this time with a 15MB connection, BUT I decided to add a wireless router to network all the computers in my house. So I'm now connected to the internet using an ethernet cable plugged into a Netgear wireless cable modem gateway (model #CG814WG).

At first when I moved I was able to connect to SL with no problem (though I wasn't spending hours in world so I can't be certain that everything was working perfectly from the beginning). But within a couple days of having the new connection, I was unable to connect to SL very easily or if I could get in I would crash soon thereafter. I get the 'downloading clothing' message as I log in and every thing is grey and I'm usually Ruthed or I log in underwater or in the sand, and I can't move, so usually something funky. Occasionally I CAN get into SL with no problems. Last night, for example, I was in world for about 4 hours (with crashes about once every hour).

I'm really not sure what's going on. The only difference in my connection is a new house with the Netgear wireless router (but again I'm using it wired). I've tried to connect to SL with three different computers on the same connection and I get the same issues, so I know it's not a PC issue. I've been working with my internet provider (Comcast), trying to get them to help me out, but they insist that everything is working perfectly and are not much help. I've heard talk that SL has some issues with these wireless routers causing problems. Does anyone know a fix for this problem? Are there any settings I can change to make this router work? Or do I need to get my cable company to give me back a wired modem? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I've been away from SL for almost three weeks now, and I've been going through SL withdrawl, please help!! LOL.

Thanks much in advance!!!

Three weeks??? you need to move back to the old house dude. (if that's your only option)

But seriously, there are a few special ports that SL uses for both UDP and TCP
443 TCP
12035-12036 UDP
12043 TCP
13000-13050 UDP

Many routers have this under port forwarding settings
hope this helps ease your suffering.

plz ignore suggestions to:
get a better computer
new graphics card,
driver software,
power supply,
soundcard,
monitor,
mouse,
chair,
.
.
.

lol

you need to get a better computer, new graphics card, driver software, power supply, soundcard, monitor, mouse, and chair

check your ports as mentioned above, and keep an eye out on your internal connection, windows xp isnt very good at this, the software that came (or was suposta come) with the networking card is usually alot more detailed about the signal

in one instance our 2.4ghz cordless phone was mucking with our 2.4 ghz wireless router simple fix was to move one to the other side of the room (phone in our case)

Also, Wireless is not as fast as a hard-wired connection.

And then there's the fact that wireless can be slowed by obstacles- walls, floors, sunspot activity, etc. Even cell phones, microwaves, or anything on the 2.4 Ghz spectrum can interferre with it.

There's the Wireless N, but its not an industry standard, and I've already heard from folks who's neighbors Wireless N connections have overtaken & cancelled out their wireless B & G.

Have you tried the usual stuff (clear cache, reinstall SL)?

Also be sure wireless is disabled on your PC if you're using the ethernet cable.

Have you tried a site like speedtest.net or dslreports.com/speedtest to be sure you're getting the speed you're paying for? (up and down)

Check the port assignments on your router as suggested above.

Maybe your router needs a firmware upgrade?

Um, guy's? he IS connecting using ethernet cable to the router bybassing the wireless.
mayby the confusion is the he stated (unneseesarily?) that he connects the router to the modem via cable. But he also said the other, that

I'm not sure how well you know your way around routers, but log on to your router setting by checking the manual.

Netgear routers have alot of securty on them, so do the following:

-Disable SPI Firewall
-Disable trial software
-You do not need to open any ports to connect to Second Life
-Remove any 2.4Ghz phones in the house
-How strong is your connection? 70% or higher is recommended.
-Try buying another router

Now I wasn't sure if you were using wireless or not, so I just included both sides.

Also, this is not Sirena, it's her friend. Please don't ask her anything in game because she is pretty....um....not good when it comes to computers. I hope the list helps in some way.
