I suspect the new patch for xfire is responsible for client crashes. If you use xfire and SL refuses to start after you start the program, exit xfire completely, start SL then start xfire again.

Thank you for this post - Tonight was my first time trying SL and I found that closing XFire allowed me to start SL, when it had otherwise been crashing.

There was a severe bug with Xfire 1.70 that caused games to crash. They've since released 1.71 and have said the bug is fixed.
