SOCKS Proxy broken?

In the Network preferences, there's a setup for SOCKS proxy. Which would be great, but I've never been able to get it to work. When I set it up, SL briefly tries to connect and fails. In my SOCKS server log, I see the connection attempt and then an error message "unknown version 67 in request" and "SOCKS protocol error"

Searching through the forums I can only find some threads with people saying "It doesn't work for me either."

Does the proxy setting work for anyone? Or has it just been broken forever and very low on the list of priorities to fix?

I believe its on a very low priority to fix. I've been around for over a year (since 1.6.x) and I've never seen it work.

Yes, it would be very nice if these settings worked...
