Now What!!! Please Help

Installed my New Card today .The GeForce 6600gt x8 Agp ddr3

Ihave Installed the up dated draver i have the 77.77 nvidia driver iin here / I have my shadows turned off / My Bios is 5.43.02.39.51/ My Display setting are 1024x768

Now i sign on and auotmactially crash i stay on for all of 56 seconds HUMMMMM

May be some one here can help im getting very fustrated with this ... just spend like 200$ for this card ... see if one of you can make sence of this info okies And YES!!!!! i have taken out sl and reinstalled it to my comp as well

Uninstall SL, uninstall your video drivers then use a program called "DriveCleaner" to clear out any old drivers. If your old card was an ATI this is really important.

Update your motherboard drivers and your bios. (your bios may not support these newer cards if it is a few years old)
Good idea to make sure your sound card drivers are up to date as well.

Reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers and be sure to reboot the machine a couple of times then reinstall SL.

Give this a try, if this doesn't help at least it can be eliminated as the problem.

The Emachine site is down right now ... where i ususally get all my updates .. so i know im getting the right updates for my comp ... and some of the sites are confussing ,.,,, and dont want to get the wrong updates ,,, for it ... Does any one know ... of a place where i can pick the updates ... for a eMachines model W1800 .... some site make is confusing ... for me and probally others ... lol and ll Re your compnet KAT.... on the drivers thing i had already did that part before installing the new driver ... so thats one off the check list ....

does it just happen in SL or any graphics intensive game or otherwise? if you get on for 56 seconds then crash, it sounds like it could be your video card overheating... no clue though. you might check and make sure that the fan on the video card is spinning.

PS; i finally got the update page for the emchine site ... too see ... my bios is the right one ... for this comp ... i cheacked them all there with what i have on my comp ... and with what sl wants .... and every thing there is up to date ... so i just dont know .... any other help would be appericated

The power supply is likely the problem here. Emachines save money by using smaller power supplies. If it is less than a true 300 watt power supply it will shut down due to overload(I recommend a 350 or 400watt) since this is a powerhungry card.

I have a a 450 waqtt power supply on my comp right . now .. i had did my home work ... one this .... i emailed nvidia .... toild them every thing about my comp and what program i run ... .. so i did do my home work before for hand

And just checked my fan it is running very smoothly smiles .. but just incase it has been over heated in ant way i just ordered this ... to cool things down a little more Smiles

If you suspect you may have power or cooling problems and want to really stress test your card then have a look for Aquamark3. If you turn all the options on it should push your graphics card as hard as it will go.

Hinkley i just got this card to day ... im just talking any suggestion i can and covering every angle that can be covered .....
making a check list and unlimitating any and every possiblity .,. there is .... trying to pin pin point where the problem may lay .....

Describe exactly what it does when it crashes. Also, you try just running with the case cover off? Emachines typically don't have enough case fans and from you you say you ordered, this will only stirr the air inside the machine, you need to ensure the heat is removed from the case. If you open the case and put a house fan blowing into it and it helps the problem then you need to buy more fans, if it doesn't affect it then it may not be a heat problem.

There is always the possibility of a bad video card as well.

Well i put in my user name and password ... then it conects i down load my invertnory then bam...it crashes ... i really didnt have this problem til the last update ... ihave never had this problem at all twith my emachine before ihave used this same machine in sl for over a year now and used to be able to stay obn for 12 hrs straight ... so i know it not my comp ... so i know it not over heating aty all ... im just ironing out every possilbity ... and ive also e-mailed ..nvidia ..and emachine them self .. on this issues as well .. i lve sl but this does get very fustrationg ...

So let me get this straight, you have been using this machine for over a year and had no problems running SL then with the last update you couldn't get on. You then installed a new video card and it still does the same thing? You have the latest drivers for everything correct? You have a new 450watt power supply that was recommended by Nvidia? You have made sure all the connections are tight and all the cards are seated properly right?

Things to try:

Open your account from a different computer and verify it works correctly. There have been a couple of people reporting corruption in their inventory caused crashing. If the other computer does the same exact thing then there may be a corrupted file and LL may have to look at it.

Run a memory checker program, might have some bad memory. http://www.memtest86.com/ Let the test run overnight if you can.

Look at your CPU cooler, make sure first off it is clean and dust free. Infact you need to dust out the entire box with compressed air. If you have some thermal paste handy you can then check the thermal paste between the CPU chip and the heatsink. (at least one person has had this problem on the forum) Sometimes not enough paste is used or it becomes old and brittle leading to cpu overheating.

As a last resort you can try formatting the harddrive and reloading windows.

It could just be coincidence and the issue is with SL itself. I'm unable to stay in game for the past few hours. When I get in I'm ok for about 20 seconds then freeze then crash. Haven't had this problem before

Might be an idea to try logging into the preview, www.secondlife.com/preview as that is using a seperate grid and login is working fine there, just remember its a test enviroment

Thanks KAT....Yeah i even had this problem with my old card i had ir was a 5200 then i had gotten the 6600 one .... and once a week a air take canned air to my comp .... ... and ... i had already did the reformat of my whole system yesterday ... i do this every so often just to get rid of garbage ect that might accumlate in the comp ...

May Have to call them tomarrow to see what is going on this has gone on for like 2 weeks now .. and ive tried every thing humanly possible to get in ..... ...

You have nothing else wrong with any other programs, other games work ok? You may need to call and make sure they haven't blocked your account for some reason.

Well kat .. i think I may have hit on some thing here smiles .... i had got the lastest driver like lindens told me too ..okies ... i ran sl its crashed ... but come to my dismay ... that ... i was reading more about my card ..and found out that it has alot of shadowing options .... .. So i said okies ... did a trail run ... I unchecked my Shadows button here and said what they hay ...

i had sign on and now able to saty on .. I think appartently ... whe i was checking the shadows it was taking part of the functution away from the card and it wasnt working right .... how weird ... but it works ... still going to get the fans and still going to upgrade on memeory smiles ... just to make it run smoohter ... ....

So im thinking with some of these cards that are higher graphics and more shadowing options ... ppl may want to uncheck there shadowing .. and give it a try ...
