This is a massively busy forum, so if I don't get a response, I'll deal.
I recently bought a [to me] beast machine, but it seems that my performance on SL has only gotten worse. Which really kills me, because my wife has no problems on her laptop!
I will be upgrading my RAM and VRAM, so I need some advice as two which it is that's killing me the most here.
Computer stats!
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.21GHz 512MB RAM 64MB RAM [shared] GeForce 6100 nForce 405 Chipset SATA 160GB Realtek High Def Digital Sound
This is a brand new WinXP install [lol vista], and with all the settings on the lowest I can't break 10fps on any server.
Please help, and let me know what is going on! My wife has so much fun on SL and I can barely load my own av!
Thanks in advance!

They are both killing you.
Two gigs of ram would help, and get a video card. That sharedone is sucking memory from your ram and not very good anyway. I would reccomend an Nvidea card, as they seem to have fewer issues with SL.
You should be able to do this for minor output if you shop around.

Thanks for the info! I'm about two months away from getting 2G of RAM, and the new video card is on the books, so I guess I'll get on SL when I have these.
Why is it that my wife, with a laptop with 512RAM and a dedicated but not-awesome card, CAN run it, but I can't? I thought my setup was so much better. I guess the processor doesn't count for much.

Holy crap, $30?! I could pay for that with pocket change I have right now! I'm in Canada, how does that affect my buying power? And I am indeed blessed with a PCIe slot. Did I mention this beast only cost me $CA400? You guys are awesome help.

If you don't mind a minor amount of gambling, try sourcing a good GC on ebay... I got a brand new nVida 7900GT for like 50USD

Lack of RAM is your biggest problem. Upgrading to 1GB will already make a whole lot of difference. And the difference to your wife's laptop is probably that she has a lower setting on prefs, adv.graphics, video ram (this setting indirectly affects the RAM requirement of the viewer also). Details here: http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2007/06/tweaking-performance.html
