TI4200 - That's my card!. I've had that happen to me maybe 1/2 a dozen times in my entire time in SL. Definitely not every five minutes. Relogging fixed it.

Hi Joe,
I have a similar system (older AMD + nVidia card) and would see eyeballs and attachments, then crash a few seconds later if I didn't turn away from the crowd of avatars. I downgraded my video drivers to 44.03 and it never happened again. Your results may vary.

I had that happen several times before I tried everything. I ended up uninstalling then re-installing my TI4200 VI/VO drivers from the Nvidia site, uninstalling and re-installing SL, then Ben Linden gave me a magical pair of socks that fixed the problem temporarily. Since the last 4 updates the problem hasn't returned.

My best bet would be to update your video drivers and check for memory hogging programs in your task manager. A good resource to find unwanted memory hogs is:
http://www.answersthatwork.com and go to their The Task List link. Good luck! ;)

ya, seems to happen when there are a LOT of textures around, ie a lot of memory being used. Possibly check your options and set your mem settings to the < 512MB ram if it already isn't.

I've seen (or NOT seen) invisible people since the first day I joined Second Life. (The first building class I attended was taught by a floating tophat and monicle.) And it still happens for me to this very day. It happens on Macs and PCs, on my home cablemodem connection or my T1 work feed, day/night, left/right... All the time. Most of the time, switching groups will cause the Invisibles to reapear. If that doesn't work (which is rare) I just have to relog.

It has been getting progressively more common over the past year+.

I wish they would fix it.

Welcome to the modern commercial world.

Money is never wasted on additional dev work if the product is already good enough.

And how do they know if it's good enough? Simple, by the volume of complaints. Few complaints, no point wasting shareholder money revisting old code, it's an easy equation.

And therefore we have only ourselves to blame for not piling on the complaints bigtime.

This is no joke by the way, even though it may sound like it when put that way. Being freelance, I see the dirty laundry in a lot of companies, and it's completely universal.

Project managers don't get much extra budget for bug fixing either, whereas they always do for new developments, so that's another huge factor reducing their love for code maintenance. And whereas they can put a nice friendly tick in the "Done that" box for new work completed, the maintenance effort is never finished --- damn unsatisfactory from the point of view of an archetypal clean-desk management type.

So complain, by Help->Report Bug, by pestering Live Help (they have my hearfelt sympathy, and should be paid for their effort), by writing in emails, and on the forums frequented by Lindens (it's not worth much, but I guess it might help occasionally). And do it several times each day.

This sounds entirely nuts, I know. One bug report from one person should be enough, surely!!! I wish the world were more ideal and it were so.

Unfortunately, it's not, and bug reports have nothing to do with informing them of bugs (well, the first report does that). They are simply an instrument of customer pressure. It's quite sad, but that's how it is.
