PCI Graphics cards and SL (not AGP or PCI-Express)

Will PCI Nvidia or ATI graphics cards work ok with SL? A friend has a Dell Dimension 3100 which has an integrated Intel graphics card that is definitely not supported. She wants to upgrade it by adding a better graphics card however the system only has 2 PCI slots and 1 PCI-Express x1 (too small to take x16 cards).

I've found a 128mb PCI Geforce card (the 6600 I think) that should work with her PC but I'm worried it won't be good enough for SL.

Anyone have any experiences with PCI graphics cards? I haven't touched one myself for 5 years!

It would be an upgrade indeed. They should work fine. Just make sure its not a PCI-Express and is a PCI.

Oh man. I saw this thread and thought I was gonna see people saying "yeah PCI cards don't work" and freaked. XD All I have are PCI slots, according to a friend, so I didn't wanna be screwed out of being able to buy a new card that'd work. lol

The one I've recommended is definetly PCI only, I also got her to check she has a free slot which she does.. thankfully! My only concern now is how the integrated Intel graphics card will behave... I'm guessing perhaps it'll have to be disabled via a jumper on the board. Maybe someone reading this knows more about that than me, I work in IT but I kind of moved away from hands-on stuff a few years back.

The system only has 256mb of RAM.. I'm not entirely sure how RAM hungry SL is as I've only ever played it on a system with 2gb of RAM (or greater) but would upgrading the RAM at the same time as adding a PCI graphics card be a good idea?

But if it has a PCI-E slot, why would you want to get an antique PCI card?

edit: I see, it's only a x1 slot. That sucks.

I'd get at least 1gig RAM for SL. Definatly worth the investment.

Yep.. afaik only Matrox make a card that uses an x1 slot but Matrox cards aren't on the SL supported list.. t'would be pointless

Thanks for the advice, I'll recommend the memory upgrade too though it'll probably be a purchase made further down the line as she's only a poor student ;)

When you install the new card just disable or uninstall (your choice) the Intel drivers. It will work fine.

I am using a Dell Dimension 2360 / ATI Radeon 9200 [128MB] - PCI and 766MBs of RAM. I do not recommend a 128MB card, not even the GDDR3 cards.

From what I have seen thus far as with lots of games, SL likes Nvidia cards much better. G/f has a Nvidia 6600GT [128MB GDDR3] - AGP and 512MBs of RAM and gets double the FPS that I do.

So 1gb or more of RAM and a nice 256-512MB video card and they should be rockin.

I would also recommend upgrading the power supply 400Watt+, OEM PSUs from Dell are weak and any new graphics card will put a hurting on it.
