Hi, I picked up an AGP GeForce 7600GS (BFG Make) with 512 Megs of video RAM. Sure it's much nicer than my older 6200 it's replacing, but in Preferences, the option to select 512 Megs video RAM is greyed out. Is that reserved for the cool kids with dual PCI Express machines with twin 256?

Did SL do the detect hardware when you launched it? That option is in preferrences somewhere or on the log in page somewhere. Something to the effect of "detect hardware on next startup"..................something like that.

What do you know? That was deselected, let's try again, relog, and nope, still greyed out. Looking again, the auto detect switched off, maybe I screwed up, let's try again, press apply, press okay, relog... autodetecting hardware message plays, and... nope. Still greyed out. Next step, fiddle with the video card settings, maybe there's some setting in there somewhere... ~Kami

Well, poop!! I tried. Actually when I upgraded to my current video card my 256 option was greyed and stuck on 128 for a long time...........i don't remember when I found that detect hardware box but I checked it and mine quite being greyed out. But I think I deselected the 128 too.......might be something to try.

also check for bios upgrade for your card. i have an nvida quadro card with 512, it was recognized as 256 until i did a video bios update. at least thats when i noticed that i was able to select 512. so i'm not 100% sure if it was a new sl client (i always run the newest first look viewer) or bios that fixed it.

Is that reserved for the cool kids with dual PCI Express machines with twin 256? 2x256 pci-e cards does not give you 512 vid ram : p ,its still 256
