This may be a problem with my system , but appears to have just started recently. Been thinking of reinstalling XP for a few months now so I may do that this weekend. Just thought I'd ask first because currently SL is almost impossible to use.

Running: Windows XP Pro , AMD XP 2100 , 1gig ddr3200 ram , geforce4 ti 4200 128 meg nvidia , cable modem directly plugged into my desktop machine through a usb port.

I can get in game fine , but after a few minutes my client will freeze. Streamng music continues, but the client/system goes unresponsive. This last about 20-30 seconds and the client resumes normal operation. Without SL running my system is stable, call of duty and other games work great. Only when the client is the focused window does this happen.

At first this was causing all avatars (minus attachments) to disappear. The avatar vertex checkbox has fixed that.

I double checked all my video card settings , made sure processor/memory intense programs were not running through the processes menu, and found a new driver update on nvidia.com which I installed. No change. processor doesn't appear to be overheating , actually running quite cool if the bios / windows software monitors I have are accurate. I believe I also upgraded to directX 9 recently. (Wondering if that was the start of my problems)

Turned down bandwidth in network to 150 , turned off shadows, basically every feature I could think of I turned off including audio.

Cleared the cache , Uninstalled/Reinstalled SL .. still it happens. it seems if I run SL in full screen rather than a window it is much more stable, but it still freezes and runs extremely slow?

It seems to point to a video issue in my opinion. I had a weird thing happen last night which hadn't happened before. I was scrolling around with the mouse in camera view and the text on the menus became extremely distorted as well as the text to the point I had to shutdown SL with the task manager. It looked like I was reading an alien language lol.

I'm thinking it may be my video card fan not cooling efficiently , but am not at home to check that. It would make sense since the problem doesn't start happening until after a while. May try to switch my video card out with my nvidia card from work.

Its so odd, I've been in SL for almost 2 years and have never had this problem. Anyone have any other suggestions as to possible causes or things I can try?

Guess I can do the video card switchout, than the XP install if worse comes to worse.

Dan,

I had the exact problem starting right after the 1.60 release

Someone suggested to turn off shadows from video preferences.

I did and have not locked up since.

This morning, out of curiosity, I turned shadows back on and went back to locking up, so it seems the updates since 1.60 did not correct the problem.

Good luck!

T

ps. Sorry, I did not notice you had already tried shadows :(

Btw, one thing I will note on... if ever you notice network slowdown, it's highly suggested to get a network card and connect the cat-5 directly to the card (or build in network port if the motherboard has one). USB has a bandwidth limitation, which can make things seem "smooth" at times... but that's because it's actually downsizing some of that precious bandwidth you're paying for. If downloads ever seem slower than they should be going, or loading tends to be an issue, may want to try this. *cheers*

Old post but its still happening. I finally reinstalled XP and still the same problem with this 2nd video card. I did open up the logs and I'm noticing these while it starts the lockups , hundreds of them in a row:

2005-05-28T21:04:47Z WARNING Setting subimage on image without GL texture

2005-05-28T21:04:47Z WARNING Setting subimage on image without GL texture

I also get quite a few , one after another of:

Are these normal and just resent or do I have some weird issue? I upgraded again to DirectX 9.0c hoping it'd make a difference.

And another note if I tab out and go back in the lockups stop for a few minutes, but my avatar (only mine) is just a big gray blob lol.

I thought it was something I'm wearing so I changed clothes and took off attachments. Still no go .. so weird.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling Second Life, if you haven't already. There may be a bad cache file in the works, and uninstalling will remove it.

I just want to bump this again because it is still going on. It's been going on for me since at least 1.5, and it's still happening.

If I reinstall, or update the program, I get a good hour or two of playtime before the massive recurring crippling lag kicks in again. It always follows the same pattern: Everything, including just typing IMs, grinds nearly to a halt. It continues like that for several minutes, then magically everything is fine again for a few minutes. Then the lag starts again.

I know a fix for shadow rendering issues has been submitted for an upcoming patch (probably the next one.)

I found a fix finally (well so far so good) , last night I went back to an older nvidia driver and it seems to work pretty well. I haven't locked up and I'm not seeing those hundreds and hundreds of GL subimage errors.

I'll keep this thread updated if anything changes , but hopefully this will take care of it.

You know you might have stumbled on something... I know that every since I upgraded to the latest nvidia drivers... I've had problems with SL... maybe a downgrade may fix alot of issues...

Good find!

Its working great for me so far , no lockups at all .. I just uninstalled the new driver, rebooted and installed the old one and works great now. Been on for like 4 hours now with no problems.

Same problem...arghhh
06-12-2005 08:43
Here's what's happening with me...I load up SecondLife, fly a littlebit from a teleporter (like 5 seconds), and then the graphics hang but the music keeps playing (if there is any music)...This happens about 75% of the time I run SecondLife, the other times it runs for about half an hour before the same problem happens... To put this into perspective, I have no problems running other 3D games for hours (UT2k4 Onslaught) on my comp, so this seems to be a specific SecondLife glitch...

my system specs are:
Athlon64 3500+
512 x 2 GB Corsair CL2 ram
MSI Neo2 Platinum NF3 board
Antec 480W TruPower PSU
ATI X800Pro 256MB AGP Video Card
2 x WD Raptor 36GB (Raid 0)
Windows XP Pro SP2

all latest drivers and firmware...oh, btw, I'm running on a 8Mbit cable connection

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated...

clarification

Just to add some detail...

When the hang occurs, all graphics and controls in secondlife freeze, but the music keeps going. When I drag another window on top of secondlife and then remove it, secondlife updates its window so restore the visual image, but that's about it. The only way to close it is from the task manager. Hope this sheds more light on the situation.

Do you have shadows turned off in Preferences? If so, when you say it hangs, what happens? Like, the entire window stops responding, or you lose the ability to see things, or to move, or you can move the camera around?

I have turned off shadows and now its ok...but before, the entire windows stops responding (menus included), I lose the ability to move around, I can't move the camera, the image just freezes...but the music plays. Like I said before, if I move a window over secondlife and then remove it, the image underneath refreshes, but nothing else changes...

so the shadows are messing up the works...

there's gotta be a way to fix that, but unfortunately I'm not a coder...

Yeah I turned everything off. Basically SL would slow to a crawl and at that point lockup completely. It was odd though because if I ran full screen the problem wouldn't happen so often. When it did I could alt-tab out and back in and I'd be okay for about 5 more minutes.

Its running great now though , played most of the weekend and haven't experienced any problems after going back to an older driver.

Before when it started happening I could open my logs and had:

2005-05-28T21:04:47Z WARNING Setting subimage on image without GL texture
2005-05-28T21:04:47Z WARNING Setting subimage on image without GL texture
2005-05-28T21:04:47Z WARNING Setting subimage on image without GL texture

hundreds and hundreds of times at the time of lockup. I watched my log file grow to over 3 megs before I shutdown. Full of those lines I copied above.

Lee Linden posted about a shadow fix in an upcoming release. Hopefully that'll take care of that problem.

I freeze all the time. Drives me mad. Was playing Dark Life earlier and died a couple of times due to the screen freezing. I have virtually everything turned off, including shadows. A fix would be nice.

I found out if I keep moving my bandwidth will stay high enough to stay in the game. If I stop moving then my bandwidth will drop to zero. What kind of problem does that sound like?
