I played SL this morning, went to work and then when I got home and tried to log on, it says "Login Failed. Second Life Cannot be accessed from this computer." I talked to some friends and they said there was an update so I deleted SL and reinstalled from the website so I would have the current version...still didn't work. Updated my video drivers...still not working. Anyone have an idea?

That message means that either your account has been suspended, generally for a Community Standards violation, or that you're attempting to connect via an IP that has been banned. If you have a dynamic IP, refresh and renew. If you've been suspended, wait for the suspension to be over.

I would assume I am not banned. I haven't done anything. Just bought some more land and been rebuilding my house with some friends. My account still says active. Not sure what you mean about refreshing and renewing my IP though.

Not sure what you mean about refreshing and renewing my IP though. ![]() Assuming you're in windows, I can tell you how to do it. - Click "Start" and "Run" - Type "cmd" (without the quotes) in the box that pops up and hit enter. This brings up a windows/dos command prompt. - Type "ipconfig /release" and hit enter. - At the next prompt, type "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. If your internet service provider assigns you an IP address (those numbers, like 127.0.0.1, that identify your computer to the internet) that routinely changes (most do), that will cause your computer to contact the server responsable for assigning them and get a new one from the pool. Check your email fist, of course, to make sure you haven't recieved any Linden messages saying you've been suspended. _____________________

I seem to be having the same problem right now...
My wife is logged in right now from the same IP (on cable modem with NATing router), but is afraid to re-log for fear of it not letting her back in... I don't think I've done anything to piss anyone off. And there's no Linden mail in my e-mail... I wonder what's up, eh. |

Oh-- and it seems to wait for about 5-10 seconds on 'Verifying Protocol Version...' before I get that error message.

Haha! Fixed it!
It seems for me that the upgrade didn't nuke something it should have out of my 'Application Data/SecondLife' folder. So, after nuking my SL install, removing this directory, and re-installing... everything worked. |

The last several updates have required my to completely uninstall SL and install the full version from the Downloads page. Be sure to turn off any antivirus or anything Nortons when you load up SL.

I had to reinstall too for that mater, except the viewer was crashing as opposed to not letting me in. But I've not had problems after re-installing.
The only think that I know was different...for a little while after I did the update, it seemed to ran fine. At some point, I upped my draw distance to abput 300. Soon after, it started crashing. _____________________

By the way, with the IP renew/release, often you need to let the machine sit for a few hours or you will just get the same IP address re-assigned. I once let mine sit overnight to be sure I got a new IP address.
Also, if you use a router, you need to do the renew/release from within the router, not the PC. |

How to get a new IP:
1) Determine if you have a router or if you are directly connected to the internet - Go to START, then RUN, then CMD, and type IPCONFIG /ALL - If it says 127.0.0.1, 69.xxx.xxx.xxx (I think that's apipa) then you have other problems contact the ISP. - 192.xxx.xxx.xxx, 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, (one other I forget). Then you are behind a router or have other problems. 2)If you have a router reffer to router documentation to release and renew the ip address (need to log into router most likly). If no router then type IPCONFIG /RELEASE, go have dinner, a smoke, a shower, sing in the rain, etc. Come back and type IPCONFIG /ALL if no new numbers are there type IPCONFIG/RENEW DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE YOUR NETWORK CONFIGURATION UNTIL: See if your ISP uses 'mac locking' if you change your network configuration (read unplugging wires other then power) it will not help the situation and infact can make it worse. If you are making changes beind a router and not to bypass it then mess with it all you like. _____________________
