We need computer specs to help you
A computer restarting or your monitor screen going black with a crash that requires a powering off of the computer indicates you have some serious issues..........not related to SL. A couple of things to check right now..........are your fans working properly? Take off the side of your computer and blow the dust out. Go the your graphics card manufacturer's web site and see if there is a driver update. Video drivers are capable of causing your discribed problems but other than that it's looking like a hardware problem...........encluding video card failing, power supply failing, and hard drive failing. Sometimes it simply heat that causes the problem.......fans are very important and cleaning the dust out of the box is just as important. |

By "new client" are you talking about the Release Candidate? The main viewer hasn't had an update for several weeks now.

im doing a full sweep for any viruses right now..i hope that is the issue because i have no idea what to do. i dont really want to take the side off my computer...and idk..lol LOL........it's not that hard to take the side off your computer . But, if you are hesitant get someone who knows how to do if for you. Dust inside your computer is probably the number one cause of heat related problems. And it only takes a few weeks to get a substanial amount of dust inside too. You really need to find out what is causing your computer to reboot or completely freeze up like you said it is doing. Programs like SL put a heck of a strain on even a high end gamers machine and anything that might be on the edge of failure might "give up" while you are playing. but, sooner or later even simplist of word processors will start having the problems if you don't find and fix the problem now. Not trying to be negative...........just telling you the truth. If you would list your computer specs including your operating system it might help the real geeks who hang out on this forum to give you some other things to look into. I'm just one of those "fiddlers".............I dabble in my computers. I've built 4 in my life so I'm not afraid to take the side off and look to see if I see anything obvious........like a fan not spinning. |

very few programs, including games put as much stress on your computer as SL. It's very graphics intensive and cpu intensive.............that huge amount of processing generates heat. More heat than most any program out there. If you have a then layer of dust on your graphics chip and/or cpu chip you are holding that heat next to the component..........not a good thing. Also, the additional graphics processing requires more power from your power supply........and it could over heat too. Though the power supply should handle it fine......... unless it's dusty inside and the cooler air is not flowing correctly.

Even if that does not solve your immediate problem, you possibly prevented another one down the line

There's a nice little free program that lets you monitor the temperatur of your processor. It's Core Temp: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
Normally temperature should be around 40 degrees Celsius. With sl, the temperature can easily go up to around 60 or 70. When it's much more, you know you have a prob. |

lol..i have 3 dogs and 6 cats. lol what other problems do u think might be wrong? it has nothing to to with video cards or anything because i got my computer upgraded last year. I hate to use such a tired old saying.................but last year is ancient history in computers. I had a harddrive failure on a machine that was not two months old. I've had a power supply fail for no apparant reason..........less than 2 year old machine. And I've had crashes that corrupted my operating system. The answer to your question is that there is almost an infinant list of possibilities. If you are going to exclude your machine then you'll likely never get your problem solved. I will tell you that from my experience with computers it does not appear to be software related (from your discription of the problem) if it is not a driver issue. Possibly an opersting system problem but I really doubt that because you seem to have the problem only under a heavy load. SL is certainly a heavy load but a decent computer should handle it without locking up or rebooting. If you try the dirver suggestions I've made and it still continues I'm going to say you probably should start looking at hardware or heating problems. I know that's not something you want to hear.....but you asked. ![]() And it would help immensely if you would tell a little about your computer and what it contains as far as hardware, OS, drivers and related stuff. Very hard for me or anyone to be specific with only a discription of a problem. All we can say is generalized stuff........not helpful if it's not something simple. And apparently your problem is not simple. Help us help you. |
