No SL for the last 2 days for me

Well, I have got on just a couple of times in the last 2 days - when I get in I get:

0Kbps connection

Then I obviously can't move or do anything, this happens after a couple of minutes of getting in.

For the most part I'm getting stuck at 'Verifying Protocol version'

then after 1 minute or so I get 'Unable to connect to Second Life. The System may be down. Please try again in a few minutes, or click Help, for advice and a link to the status web page.'

Now I know it's online, I have also checked the status page!

The problem is either my internet provider blocking ports that SL needs to connect to, or something even more hideous.

I have requested my MAC code from tiscali as they are well known criminals for traffic shaping & port blocking.

If anyone can shed more light into the equation, please let me know?

Meanwhile I have at least a 5 day wait for my MAC code........tap tap tap ho hum.

Do you have a Firewall?

Usually when I have this problem, it is Firewall related, you should check your firewall, to ensure that it is not by chance being blocked, if it isn't being blocked, reinstalling the firewall may resolve the issue

It's really likely that it's not my firewall, otherwise I wouldn't get in at all.

Last time I was actually able to use SL relatively normally was Friday, prior to that I had configured my firewall so that SL would run.

I will uninstall my firewall just to see what happens.

But, if you have heard of tiscali - this does point to another of their dirty tricks!!

I had this same problem and realized that Norton had done an update. I opened Norton and turned off the worm protection and I get right in, but if it turns itself back on, the av freezes until it is turned off again. Hope this helps, good luck !

Very unfortunately I have an edition of Norton that doesn't have this option - I'm just very close to uninstalling Norton altogether, seems to be a system bloater & certainly not all it's cracked up to be.

I have Norton Internet Security 2005 (fully updated) but I've been through the entire programme looking for this option, and it's not included!

AVG is probably the way for me to go now, free but rated & even by the guys at www.Majorgeeks.com

Thanks for replying Starfall :)

I've used AVG in the past and it is the only virus scan that I use anymore. It is not a system hog, yet does its job. The free part is also nice. Makes a good replacement for any of the virus scans that require you to get a yearly subscription.

I have Norton Antivirus, so there might be a difference. I cannot find the worm protection program thru the main program either, I open a different view by right clicking on the tray icon and opening it that way. It brings up an option type window where you can change things including the worm protection. Give it a try, see if your version has this option. Again, good luck !

It's useless crap. AVG FREE is all you need for viruses. Windows XP has a built-in firewall. Windows Defender is free and protects you against spyware/malware. (Even people who hate Microsoft seem to agree it's a pretty good program.) Norton and McAfee are on their last legs as far as consumer 'internet security' software goes. Their entire business is about keeping you too frightened to let your subscription expire, but they're basically providing redundant services that really just slow down your computer and make it more difficult to use.

Also, I once brought my notebook to some friends' house to show them what Second Life was about. I was able to log in (it accepted my username and password), but could never actually get in-world. It turned out to be their cable modem's built-in firewall. They switched it to 'low security' or something and SL worked fine... just an indication that a firewall can give you partial access, making the problem tough to diagnose.

Tiscali

Cheri if you are using Tiscali, please check your Tiscali mailbox to see of they have sent you warning letters about their 'Fair Usage Policy'.

If they have please email me at de@e3.co.uk

I beleive that their Fair usage policy is invalid in law. I am filing court proceedings next week against Tiscali.

I have so much evidence against Tiscali now that I seriously think arrests can be made.

Dark, can you also copy your post into the thread started by Chang "can't log in properly" -
there are a lot of tiscali's unhppy customers congregating there.
