Solution To Crashes On Pc Here!!!
03-28-2006 12:28
How to fix crashes with Second Life on pc:
1) Uninstall Second Life 2) Reboot your pc 3) Go to your Start Menu -> Run... Run the program regedit Search for and delete EVERYTHING that is called secondlife (both registry settings and all folders with that name in them) 4) Reboot your pc again 6) Download latest version of Second Life 7) Install Second Life Should not crash now Good luck!I can confirm this have worked on my two machines, one running XP Home and the other Win 2000. Not only did it solve crashes, but I'm now for the first time able to see, attach, use and create HUD objects - plus I suddenly got 100% higher fps ![]() |

Thanx for sharing this, Lisbeth--this is a fundamental troubleshooting step; good to know lest anyone forget what it is.
Related to this is creating a new username in Windows and then logging into that and installing just SL in an (even moreso) isolated space. Glad to hear things got better for ya! Moved to Technical Issues, so more Resis who've found success through this "clean uninstall and reinstall" can post too! ![]() _____________________

Torley, I put it both here in Technical and Answers so more people could see it. Perhaps an idea to put somtething like that into an easy to find sticky somewhere, as well as faq and/or wiki? Wish I had known earlier - for me this was the last thing to do before giving up.
So happy that 4 months of frustration is gone ![]() Lis |

Ah--I'll merge the threads then. You can add contributions to the support wiki if you'd like. One suggestion I'd make is a more in-depth step-by-step of how to use Regedit, as some may see it and go: "What's that?"

If this actually works - it sounds like there's an uninstall issue going on...
cleaning up secondlife registry entries?? I'd think this warrants some further comment from Linden. _____________________

What does this fix exactly? Crashes? The problems I get are mostly disconnections from the servers... could it be related?

HUGSaLOT, it removes old registry settings left there from previous installations of SL - which I think interfere with newer versions of SL. I did not experience disconnects (or perhaps I did without being aware of it), but I would say give it a try. Just be careful when messing around with registry.
Good luck ![]() Lis |

additional help
03-28-2006 21:57
Hey Lisbeth
Thank you so much for posting this, like others i also had loads of problems with crashing. Prior to your great post which I have also followed, I did a double check of the preferences and found that sl was incorrectly detecting my vid card memory. I thought this problem was fixed previously but it seems its back..at least for me eachtime I upgrade to a new patch.. so if you are still having problems, you need to reset your vid card memory in the bios. hope that helps others still suffering the great crash of march 06. thanks iz |

I did a double check of the preferences and found that sl was incorrectly detecting my vid card memory. "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -purge -noprobe A tip I saw somewhere else at forum: Make a copy of this modified shortcut to desktop calling it SL or something. Then installers of new versions will not overwrite that shorcut, so you don't have to enter the flag settings again. Lis |
