What's the last thing it does before crashing? It loads to the "connect" screen? It crashes after you press "connect"?

384 mb ? so you are using 128mb i guess on the SiS vid card? The SiS 760 Chipset built-in a high performance 256bit 2D/3D graphics engines with a Rendering Engine compliant to Direct3D 8.1 Sorry but thats not a good card for SL at all ~.~ im pretty sure this is the reason you got issues, Good cpu wait wait, 512 mb on a a64?, that would mean you have 2x256 sticks is needed for a a64 cpu if they didnt invent something i dont know about , id highly recommend 2x512 if you can get that, under 512 is horrible on winxp sp2 (maybe im picky~.~)(windows easy eat 500mb just starting up, so you will be swapping alot) horrible onboard vid card , funny thing new windows Vista thing i read, they wont support most onboard vid cards, only in a super light version (why not still use winxp then M$ -.-) :*/

Yeah, you're not going to get into SL with that onboard video. Buy a Nvidia GeForce 5200. They cost around $50 and will be just fine for SL. (This assumes you have a motherboard with an AGP slot. You may not. Find out first.)

heh yeah i kinda figured this onboard graphics thing wouldn't cut it... oh well... i'll have to get myself a good nvidia card then, and yes i think i got some agp slots, if you are talking about the small metal pads that can be taken out to put new hardware in it, but i just spent a bunch of money on this computer, so its gonna be a little bit of time before i go and get a card hehen (good things come to those who wait)

Just curious. Is this computer a name brand machine or one you had built by a local shop? If we knew which motherboard your machine has, we might be able to make better video card suggestions. If you have to absolutely run SL as soon as possible, there are a few inexpensive cards that will at least work on minimal settings.
The small metal pads aren't AGP slots. They are fillers to close the holes where (future) expansion cards sit. Also, if your computer has an AGP slot, it would most likely only have one, which on a tower case (I'm assuming your computer has a tower case, but I could be wrong) would be behind the topmost filler.

Something to consider

After downgrading from XP Pro to XP Home, I was unable to logon to SL. The machine would shut down when I tried to load SL. I knew my card would handle SL, so I was really confused for a while. I went to System Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery. The default settings called for automatic shutdown on error. I unchecked it, and on the next crash I was able to read about the causes of error, etc. Hope this may be of some help.
