Mysterious HUD attachments cause slowdown?

Yesterday I've noticed a strange thing for the second time. When the game started running slow and skippy, I right-clicked my avatar to take off some clothes... And guess what: despite the fact I didn't attach anything to the hud, I had attachments at it: top, upper right, center 2, lower right and, AFAIR, bottom. WTF? When I tried to take them off, game crashed. Crash logger doesn't work for me either.
