Our group has bought 22K sqm of land in the new and relatively sim of Falcata. The place is great and I spent a great deal of time wandering there, as in the rest of SL, with no issues.
However, I bought an additional 8K sqm adjacent to that plot and in the same sim this week-end. Every single time I cross the boundary between the main group land and that new plot, the following phenomenon takes place:
- Within seconds, my framerate starts dropping. At first, I move normally, then things get jerky, then I move or interact with the interface (type, ...) at one frame per second, then 1 per 5 seconds, ...
- It gets so bad that trying to click on the UI causes "Client not responding" to appear in the title bar (I play in windowed mode all the time. Have done so for weeks). So, clearly, the SL client is busy doing something, but God knows what.
- Sometimes I manage to log out 30 seconds after hitting CTRL Q, sometimes I just have to kill the client in frustration.
Now bear in mind that 2 meters before that parcel starts none of the symptoms manifest themselves.
Things I've tried so far:
- Upgraded my ATi 800Xt (ie no pushover) 3D card drivers to the latest version yesterday. No effect.
- Went to my cache directory and emptied it today. No effect.
- Tries reducing a bit my client graphical and bandwidth settings today (Although my machine handles them fine including in large open spaces like the forest of Karhuvel). Again, no effect whatsoever.
I'm mystified. That one parcel of land in Falcata causes my machine grief. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
The sim itself is mostly trees and water and running very few scripts. I can't imagine a much quieter environment to experience problems in.
Any suggestions before playing with the drivers and cache contents would be appreciated.
By the way, my machine spec is: 3Ghz Pentium 4, 2GB of RAM, 256Mb ATi 800XT video card, 35Gb free on my 120Gb hard disk. It's good enough to run the game.
The fact that the problem is not intermittent but systematic for me on that plot makes me wonder what is wrong with the client. My friends can walk on it fine.Wendel
