Lenovo Thinkpad T60p (2008-8JG) with ATI FireGL V5250

Windows Vista Business

latest Lenovo driver crashes SL at startup (as described in several forum topics)

:-(

Catalyst driver from ATI
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/...on-vista32.html

modded by driverheaven modtool (followed the detailed steps described)
http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

installed, rebooted, voilá ..

:-)

P.S. sorry for double post but a sleepless night seems to me being reasonable for that

Hi
Which catalyst version are you currently running & with which viewer?

I'm finding SL is crashing frequently (~10 mins?!!) with 1.17.0.120 (also modded) + 7.6 on my T60p, also with Vista x86 business.
knowledge of a known good configuration would give me a solid starting point.

Having said that another box with a NVida 6600GT is crashing occasionally (once every few hours) when running SL.

I take it back....

After some investigation it appears that either a freeze or instant shutdown is caused by my laptop overheating.

The cpu/gfx temp breaches 100 deg.C and, if it's quick enough, Vista immediately issues a shutdown........ if it's not -> hang.

One might think the bios would be able to manage the cooling. Possible hw repair investigation needed, but may *not* be a SL/driver issue!

SL can be a laptop (or even full size system) killer in regards to running your proc at 100% for lengthy amounts of time, as well as heating up your GPU under load. Once a proc is heat damaged it's over with. The damage can not be reversed and a heat damaged proc is more prone to overheating at a much faster rate, and becomes much less tolerant thusly causing lock-ups doing mundane tasks in the future.

The only solution is make absolutely sure you run your lappy in as cool a situation as possible. DO NOT; use it on your lap (why do they call them lap tops anymore), use it on a sofa, bed, or any other fluffy heat retaining apparatuses. I would get something like a chill pad or be sure to keep it on a hard, solid surface that can help draw away the heat.
