I had to re-log. Need I explain? Only, it's now making me wait 5 minutes before logging in again. I get a message that my account isn't available until some time that is 5 minutes in the future.

Is this an attempt to limit logins?

Hello? [knocks on LL's skull] Re-logging is a necessary part of this game!

It was an ill-conveived attempt to throttle overloads on the login server.

Because login times tend to be bursty (as queue theory shows) they should have used something like an exponential backoff timer. Unfortunately, the self-proclaimed creators of the next generation web do not appear well versed in the relevant technology and thus have re-invented the wheel many times without the benefit of those who figured these things out before.

Indeed, by putting a fixed timer on retries, they are guaranteed to exacerbate the problem. For example, suppose 100 logins arrive at once and 50 are rejected and given a five minute holddown. In five minutes you'll have the rejected 50 plus new arrivals knocking on the door.

The first step should have been to optimize the login server - which they didn't do. The second step would have been to build in an exponential backoff, hidden from the user with an "excessive logins... waiting" message (and hopefully a quit button).

Unfortunately, these are the same people that tried to reinvent TCP on a UDP substrate without nice things like sliding windows, piggybacked ACKs, and selective retransmission. I'm of the impression that no one at LL knows the theory of anything invented prior to 1992.

I might also suggest that whatever message is used it not be made to look like the user is being punished. I thought it was preventing me from re-logging, as if that's an unnecessary drain on the system, when in fact it's a way of life here.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

They say this causes less stress inthe login. But infact it causes more stress. Each time people bang away at the long while trying to get back in during that 5 min of banishment. As one person said just keep trying you get in asap. I wish they lose taht message  . WHo ever came out with this screwball idea of 5 min waiting should have thier Linden title removed.
