A Helpful Tip: I sorta found this one out on my own and maybe it will be helpful you some of you out there.

If the world is hazy to you, dim or foggy, and your photos look like this, you may still have your FOG DISTANCE RATIO set to default. Go to EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> ADV. GRAPHICS and raise the FOG DISTANCE RATIO to the max of 4.0.

The first pic is with the default of 1.2 and the second is at 4.0. Snaps taken at exactly the same spot with a DRAW DISTANCE of 128.

OF COURSE...some people prefer the foggy, misty look so it is personal preferance.

Yes great for doing pics. But if have a low end machine don't forget to turn it down again after. Else you will be crying on your keyboard about the laginess.

I leave mine stuck at 4 (lucky number hehe), and even though it is laggy at times, I appreciate the added clarity and there's not an easier way to toggle preferences—wish there was a macro to switch between "playmode" and "photograf" modes, or even diff. sets in Preferences to access through a dropdown menu.

Additionally you can turn off fog from Debug menu but this looks unnatural at the cutoff distance.

Thanks for sharing this, ReallyRick... more Residents should really know!

According the the menu, FOG DISTANCE RATIO doesn't have a "Lower is Faster" designation. I pulled up my statistics and did not see any decrease or change in FPS switching back and forth between 1.2 and 4.0 at all.

Hmmm... that may be the case. I think, rather, Draw Distance is one of the primary factors...

If you've got the Debug menu up (control-alt-shift-D), you can toggle the fog completely on/off with control-alt-6. Look in Debug > Rendering > Features.

Like many debug toggles, this doesn't stick from one login to the next.

I would be interested in knowing if the fog distance ratio does make a difference for some people. It might seem logical that it might not need to draw as much detail in the distance, but seeming logical and actually being the case are not always the same thing. For all I know it does all the calculations needed to display the distant detail and then additional calculations to apply a fog effect.

I too like a FDR of 4.

I've never noticed or dont think there is any performance difference with any fog setting, if its not drawing the fog its drawing the buildings, i think its more cosmetic so you can get a good fade out when you reach your draw distance if you suddenly dont want things to stop being there and want it to fade to fog as you reach the limit.

Personally for taking photos, i jump up the draw distance, allows me to get in alot of background and have fog in the very distant.
