Is there any way to do this?

EDIT: If not, that's something that SL should think about incorporating into the program.

Second Life does work with proxies IF the proxy allows unblocked communication on the ports we need to connect on.

If not, then we're just like any other program that can't get the ports we need; it won't work.

Universities in particular tend to have UDP network access totally disabled; UDP isn't used by websites but is used by file-sharing programs (which, left unchecked, will consume a majority of a university network's bandwidth). If UDP isn't available, there isn't an effective solution for Second Life.

Lee, does that mean that the Preferences setting for SOCKS4/5 is disabled/not functional/with limited functionality? A *few* residents have reported success using it, but in my case, I was never able to make it work so far...

You could try running SL under the Hummingbird Socks client instead of using SL's own socks support.

I believe the socks 4/5 entries in preferences were left in because html was added to early versions of 1.7, and it was really meant for that, not sure how feature complete that part is as html was removed prior to preview, so it might be a good idea for them to disable the checkbox to enable proxy for now

Yes, Nathan, that was my belief as well, but some people have posted on the forums that they had success setting it up, and I wonder how they did it.

Argent, thanks for the tip. Yes, I could try that instead — if I had a PC running Windows :)

It wasnt part of the preview tests, so would of only been tested internally or privately, and it wasnt touted as a feature of 1.7 on release so im not really sure

Lee mentioned it does work but requires a full udp proxy which makes sense to get a connection to the simulators, that could also get you seeing some partial connects where you get past login but get stuck connecting to region if udp is being blocked by proxy, maybe it needs a bit of tweaking so when you enable it it sends a few packets and waits for answers etc, and then enables the options if alls ok if not it can say cant enable proxy connections to port xxx are being blocked or tcp / udp connections are being blocked. etc

Heh.

I assumed Windows because this kind of proxy problem tends to be a Windows problem, because Windows TCP/IP support is both primitive and deliberately crippled.

For a Mac it shouldn't be a problem, because there's SO many ways you can set up a stealth tunnel to the outside world on UNIX it's not funny. I know one guy who was running IP over DNS queries! Google for "ppp" and "tunnel" for more info.

You're a genius. Thanks a lot for that suggestion! Yes, that will almost surely work!
