Is SL Throttled?

I've just been into the 1.9.0.8 Preview grid... and wow... did I get some seriously good bandwidth response! When I TP'ed somewhere the bandwidth would immediately jump into the red and everything would download and rez super quick.

This is exactly the kind of experience I'm just not getting on the Live grid. On the Live grid the downloads continue to be slow and unresponsive. My bandwidth rarely even shows yellow. Getting the surrounding area to rez is painfully slooow.

So, is this by design? Are the SL servers maxed out? The routers? Frustrated minds wanna know! :p

keep in mind the preview doesn't have nearly as many active users as the main grid.

I remember seeing uber fast responce rates on the main grid, few days went by and well..
This is why thay want as many bodys on the test grids as thay can. Its the olny real good load test thay can have. Ill see you all there w. my 15k prime av on.. hahahhaha

sub 7 fps on 1.9

huh. I havent seen over 7 fps anywhere in preview. and thats with an almost empty preview and 0% packet loss. right now, my preview fps is at 0.9 fps in sandbox island. Ive been standing still here for a couple minutes, waiting for fps to go up. It doesnt seem to get much better.

I'm also in the UK. What was noticeable to me wasn't so much the difference in performance, as such, but that my bandwidth actually got used, with the textures downloading without a lot of coaxing.

While I was in the Preview there were, at most, three other people there. Movement was generally good but with the occasional 'stagger'. I wholly accept that this hardly constitutes any kind of load test... hence my suggestion that the servers on the Main grid are maybe maxed-out.

What is apparent is that different people seem to report a broad diversity of experience. I'm still trying to understand why this is - especially when I see that my bandwidth is being so under utilised on the Main grid.

Maybe on a busy grid it's the client that is throttling my bandwidth by maxing out my hardware in a way that causes the modem's through-put to be marginalised - in which case maybe the client needs to better balance some of its demands.

While in the Preview grid I can be pretty certain that my hardware, and its set up, are a constant. Therefore such a stark difference in behaviour struck me as an interesting thing to report.
